How To: Convert Your HTC One into a Developer Edition for Super Fast Sense Updates
HTC has made it their mission to get updates out to its devices as quickly as possible, with new builds slated for release 90-days after Google finalizes a build—this is dubbed HTC Advantage.After Google I/O, the company announced they would have the Android L version of Sense ready to ship within three months of the official release, which is pretty much unheard of for skinned Android ROMs (we're looking at you, TouchWiz).Keeping with that same time frame, HTC released the Android 4.4.3 version of their Sense 6 ROM, but if you do not have a Developer or Unlocked Edition of the M8, you are SOL, thanks mainly to carriers delaying release until they can inject their own crap into the software.However, every M8 is pretty much the same. Yes, they have support for different cellular frequencies—depending on what carrier they are attached to—but other than that they are identical. Because of this, we can simply flash over all the system files of a Developer Edition model, and turn any GSM M8 into a Dev Edition. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.
Sprint, Verizon, and other CDMA-based customers will still need to wait on your carrier to issue a release, or for a developer to port over a ROM.
Before We Get StartedThis process is pretty straightforward, but it does come with some prerequisites.Your M8 must be a GSM model, like AT&T, T-Mobile, and most international variants. S-Off and an unlocked bootloader are a must. ADB and fastboot are going to need to be installed on your computer; both Mac and Windows PCs will work. USB debugging must be enabled from your Developer settings. This process will WIPE YOUR DATA, so a complete backup of all your files. That also includes your internal storage, because that will be wiped as well. Once these prereqs are out of the way, you'll be ready to start the process, although I'd recommend reading through the guide once and downloading the necessary files prior to beginning this process.

Step 1: Change CID to SuperCIDThe CID, or Carrier ID, of your device determines what carrier it is attached to, and what ROMs can be flashed to it. This is what prevents an AT&T or T-Mobile ROM from being flashed to a different carrier's device. Since we will be flashing the Dev edition, we will be using that specific CID: BS_US002.Plug your device into your computer, open up cmd/terminal, and enter the following commands followed by the Enter key each time.adb reboot bootloader fastboot oem writecid BS_US002 fastboot reboot

Step 2: Find Serial Number & Download FilesDownload and extract the TWRP backup file. You will then have to place the files in the TWRP folder in your internal storage. If you don't have a backups folder, go ahead a create one. The folder structure should look like this: TWRP/BACKUPS/[SERIAL NUMBER]/BackupName. The [SERIAL NUMBER] portion will need to be changed to your device's serial number, which can be found in Settings -> About -> Phone Identity.

Step 3: Flash Stock RecoveryWith your backup in place, it's time to start the conversion. You will not need to flash TWRP, but you will need to download the stock recovery.Now enter the following commands:adb reboot bootloader fastboot flash recovery {location-of-Stock-Recovery.img} fastboot erase cache fastboot reboot-bootloader

Step 4: Boot into TWRP & Wipe DataBecause the stock recovery is needed to apply OTA updates, we will only boot into TWRP instead of completely installing it. To do that, download the latest version of TWRP, then boot into it from fastboot:fastboot boot {location-of-TWRP.img} Now that you are in TWRP, tap Wipe -> Advanced Wipe and select Dalvik Cache, Cache, and Data.

Step 5: Restore from TWRPYour device is now clean of your old ROM, so all that is left to do is to select Restore from the main TWRP screen, then pick the backup file from Step 2 and apply it.

Step 6: Reboot & Check for OTATo ensure that everything worked out fine, check to make sure you can receive OTAs from Settings -> About -> Software updates. It will take a few updates before you are all caught up to Android 4.4.3, so keep checking for updates.

Step 7: Manually Flash OTA (Optional)Sometimes it takes some time for you to get an OTA pushed to your device, so if you are not the patient type, go ahead and download the OTA.zip, which will update you to Android 4.4.3.After it finishes downloading, reboot into recovery by pressing and holding the Volume Down and Power button for about 15 seconds, then select RECOVERY from the HBOOT menu.Now that you are in the stock recovery, hold Volume Up and then press the Power button. All that is left to do is install the update, apply from phone storage -> 0/ -> OTA.zip. And that's all she wrote. This process may seem a little daunting, but trust me when I say it is totally worth it to have quick OTAs and a life free of carrier bloatware.Feel free to root this ROM, but keep in mind that if you install a custom recovery, you will not be able to apply official OTAs. But it can be difficult to leave the site, because so much of its content is only available to active users. If you want to keep in the loop without sacrificing your privacy, you'll want to follow the steps below.First, let's get this out of the way: Nothing on the internet is truly private. All of us who sign up for Facebook should know that every friend we make, event we accept, and picture we view is logged and tracked by the company. However, there are steps we can take when creating a new profile that can severely limit the information Facebook has access to. Step 1: Make a Burner Email or Phone NumberFirst, if you truly want to use Facebook off the grid, you'll need to sign up with an email account or phone number that is only used for your new profile. If you use a preexisting email account or phone number, your messages, search history, connected apps and more can potentially be fair-game for Facebook and its advertisers. The best practice here? Start from scratch.For a "burner" email, you can go about it a few ways. First, you can sign up for a new email account and only use it for creating your anonymous Facebook profile. You can choose whichever email service fits you best — the point is to make sure its only use is for your new Facebook account.Don't Miss: How to Open a New Gmail Account However, the more secure method is to take advantage of the Temp Email app. With this app, it will generate a temporary email address that isn't associated with you or your personal information. With this app, you will receive any emails sent to this email address such as any account verifications or confirmation codes. And when you don't need it, you can hit "change," essentially getting rid of email forever.Install Temp Mail: Android (free) | iOS (free) Since Facebook lets you register with a phone number, if you decide a burner email address is too much trouble, you can always create a burner phone number. Like the email, this is a fake temporary number which allows you to register for and use Facebook while protecting your data.There are several excellent choices on both the Play Store and App Store which we've already reviewed. Step 2: Use Island to Isolate Facebook (Android Only)When you create a Facebook account on your Android device, Facebook will grab as much information it can access. We already learned that Facebook found a way to still access call history without alerting the user and without requiring a permission dialog. This is why, to protect yourself, you should completely isolate the Facebook app from your data. You can do that by using an app which takes advantage of Android's Managed Profile feature.Island is an early access app which creates a sandboxed environment where you can clone apps and isolate them from your data. While it can't eliminate all data leakage (specifically device-bound data such as SMS and IMEI), it does prohibit apps from accessing information such as your call logs, contacts, and your photos.Play Store Link: Island (Unreleased) (free) So first, download Island from the Play Store. Open the app and select "Accept" and "Accept & continue" on the next page. A new page will appear telling you Island is creating a work profile. This is the sandboxed environment.Once completed, the main page will appear, which will include a few apps that are already installed in the sandboxed environment. To move Facebook to this environment, first make sure it's installed on your phone like a normal app, then select the Mainland tab at the bottom of Island's main menu. Now, select the Facebook app, and right above the navigation buttons, choose the crossed square. This will prompt you to allow Island to install the app. Select "Settings" and activate the toggle to enable the installation of the cloned app in the sandboxed environment. Once completed, return to the Island tab to see the Facebook app. You will also two versions of the app in your app drawer, the normal app and one with a suitcase icon on top of it (the cloned app). Now uninstall the app on the "mainland" by navigating to the "App Info" page of the version which doesn't have a small suitcase icon on top of the icon (most launchers let you do this by dragging the icon to the top of your home screen, then dropping it on "App Info"). From there, simply tap "Uninstall" or "Disable." This will leave you with only the cloned app, which is isolated thanks to the sandboxed environment.

Step 3: Detach Yourself from the Official Facebook AppThis step is somewhat optional, but after seeing how much personal data the Facebook app can harvest from some devices, you'll probably want to ditch the official Facebook app altogether. The best way to do this is by using either the Facebook mobile site or a Facebook wrapper app.If you're running Android, we recommend an app called Metal. It's a Facebook wrapper meant to replace the official Facebook app, and among other things, it blocks ads and uses less power than the official app. While it might not provide foolproof security, Metal won't request or use sensitive device permissions like its official counterpart. If you hop over to Settings > Permissions after installing it, you'll see Metal has no permissions enabled. Like the official app, we recommend installing Metal within Island.Play Store Link: Metal for Facebook & Twitter (free) If you're on iOS and are missing the Metal experience, consider using the Facebook mobile site instead. While you won't get native security features, Safari does come packed with some privacy settings installed. Plus, Facebook's app will drain your battery — if nothing else, using the mobile site will extend your iPhone's lifespan.Don't download the Facebook app — go to Facebook.com instead.

Step 4: Install a VPNEven with totally false credentials, Facebook can still track your location when using its service. While there are location settings to disable, if you want to make sure Facebook can't track your new account, the best thing to do is install a VPN.A VPN, or Virtual Private Network, hides the ability for programs to determine your location based on your IP address. When using a VPN, you will be provided with a new IP address, and you can even choose its location. Additionally, it encrypts your data, preventing Facebook from accessing other apps' data running in the background or currently in use.Don't Miss: The 4 Best VPN Apps for Android & iPhone For Android users, you can take advantage of VyprVPN's "Connection Per app" feature. This feature allows you to control which app should use the VPN and which app shouldn't. You can configure it to always keep the VPN on when using Facebook, but disable it for other apps to speed up the connection.
Step 5: Delete & Disable Location History DataFacebook has a feature known as "Location History" which is a set of location logs it makes as you travel with the app. However, since your location can be used to identify who you are, for the purpose of anonymity, you should turn this off. Step 6: Create a New Facebook AccountOnce you have taken the above steps into account, whether on iOS or Android, it's now time to create that new Facebook profile. Head over to Facebook.com, or open Metal on your secondary user space to get started.Tap "Create New Account," then enter a name, ideally something fake. Next, enter your burner number, or type in your burner email by tapping "Sign up with email" under Next. When finished, tap "Next." Next, enter a password, then tap "Sign Up." If prompted, you can choose whether or not to log in to Facebook with one tap, versus logging in with your name and password. Once you decide, Facebook will either send you an SMS code if you provided a phone number, or a verification email if you entered an email. Type the code here then tap "Confirm," or verify your account via Facebook's email. Welcome to your new, anonymous privacy-centered Facebook account. Now you can view groups, events and more without having to use your personal information. Once you configure these settings ...
Step 7: Change Your Facebook Privacy SettingsJust because you took the precautions in the steps above, that doesn't protect you from some privacy infringements on Facebook's part. Your account's privacy settings by default aren't perfect, and will only hurt your standing the longer you use your account.To nip these problems in the bud, before you do anything with your profile, configure these settings. While Facebook still has plenty of ways to abuse your privacy after the fact, changing these settings gives you some armor against them. Step 8: Block Hidden Permissions (Android — Root Required)While Android does allow users the ability to manage permissions accessible by apps, there are far more that apps such as Facebook can access to learn more about, and you can't do anything about these by default. For example, even with the location permission turn off, Facebook can still determine your approximate location using your network, something location permission doesn't cover. This is why you need App Ops.Play Store Link: App Ops (free) Originally a hidden feature in Android 4.3 Jelly Bean, App Ops let you adjust a large amount of permissions for individual apps, including those that Android doesn't have controls for by default. This app will also inform you when a permission will last granted. For most permissions, you either allow the app access, deny it, or only allow while in use, saving you battery and protecting your identity. For Facebook, we want to deny everything.The easiest way to use App Ops is to have a rooted device. However, it is possible to use without root but requires ADB commands. Once installed, open App Ops and select "Facebook." Whether you use VSCO to take all of your photos or you use it primarily to edit photos you take with others apps on your iOS or Android phone, you're at some point going to want your VSCO pics to end up in your Camera Roll or Gallery. VSCO doesn't add them there by default, but there's a couple of ways to get them there.Saving individual photos to your Camera Roll or Gallery is pretty straightforward. Plus, you can save all of the photos in your VSCO Studio at once or have photos you take with VSCO automatically be saved. Just follow the instructions in this guide, and your favorite VSCO photos will appear directly on your phone's built-in photos app, offering you much more flexibility with those images than VSCO can alone.Don't Miss: How to Use VSCO's Selfie Camera on Your Android Phone

Method 1: Saving Photos IndividuallyIn your Studio, which is basically the main page of the app that holds all of your photos, tap on the photo or photos you'd like to save to your iPhone or Android. Next, tap the ellipsis icon (three dots) in the bottom-right corner of the display, then tap "Save To Camera Roll" or "Save to gallery." If you haven't already granted VSCO access to your built-in photos and media, you'll have to do so before continuing. If you're using an Android phone, the image or images should be saved immediately to your Gallery or Google Photos app, whichever is your default. However, if you're on an iPhone, it may ask you to choose the image size you'd like VSCO to export the photo or photos as.Choosing the "Actual Size" option will make sure the photo or photos stay as large as they are currently. Otherwise, experiment with the other size options to see what ratio of image quality vs. storage size works for you. To make sure the photos were actually saved to your Camera Roll or Gallery, open up either the Photos app on iOS or the Gallery or Google Photos app up on Android. There should be a dedicated VSCO album as well, so you can easily find all the pics from VSCO without digging around.

Method 2: Exporting Them All at OnceHave so many photos in VSCO that hand-selecting each would be a pain? Then you can export them all at the same time. If you're signed into VSCO, you can tap on the smiley face in the bottom right; otherwise, select the feed icon (the circle with lines in it) in the bottom left. Then, tap the cog icon in the top left to access your settings. From here, tap "Preferences." At the bottom of the next page, under Studio, tap "Export all images." VSCO handles things from here, automatically saving all photos in your Studio to your Camera Roll or Gallery.

Method 3: Saving to Camera Roll Automatically (iOS Only)If you want to bypass this process entirely, there's a simple fix for that. Tap the smiley face icon in the bottom right, if you're signed in, or tap the feed icon on the bottom left. On the following screen, tap the cog icon in the top left to access your settings. Tap on "Preferences," then make sure "Auto-save captured photos to camera roll" is enabled under Camera. Once this setting is turned on, you will no longer need to manually save the photos you take with VSCO to your Camera Roll — only photos you import and edit with VSCO.

A Note for iPhone UsersVSCO may create its own folder in your Photos app after saving photos to your iPhone for the first time. If you don't want this folder, you can easily delete it. Just tap "Edit," then tap the red button that appears on the VSCO folder. Don't worry — you won't be deleting the actual photos from your Camera Roll. This is part of an effort to clamp down on OEMs that skirt its certification requirements, but now millions of phones have been uncertified to download or update Google apps. Fortunately, there are a few workarounds.To help ensure a consistent user experience on all the various Android devices out there, Google requires that manufacturers pass its Compatibility Test Suite, or CTS, if they want to ship devices with Google apps and services pre-installed. Most companies comply with these rules and get their phones certified. See if Your Device Is UncertifiedBefore getting started, you'll want to make sure your device has been blacklisted by Google so you don't waste any time.If you purchased a banned handset, you'll get a warning prompt stating "device is not certified by Google," preventing you from signing into your Google account. Although you can still complete your phone's initialization, you won't be able to access the Google Play Store due to your device's uncertified status.If you're still unsure if you're affected, open the Play Store app. From there, head to the side menu by tapping on the hamburger icon in the top-left corner. Tap on "Settings" next, then you can see your phone's status by going to "Device certification" on the bottom of the page. If it says "Uncertified," try the tips below.

Option 1: Register Your Device with GoogleThe first workaround involves registering your device with Google. This method comes courtesy of Mishaal Rahman over at XDA. Unfortunately, this fix was originally meant for pre-approved and certified devices that were modified to run on custom ROMS like LineageOS or Resurrection Remix, so it won't work with all affected devices.To start, grab an app called Device ID, either from the Play Store or by sideloading this APK.Now you'll need to retrieve your handset's Google Services Framework ID, or GSF ID, to submit to Google for processing. So open the app and copy the number within the "Google Service Framework" tab. Once you've copied your GSF ID, go to Google's device registration page and paste your GSF ID in the blank field along the bottom, then tap on the green "Register" button after doing so. Immediately after tapping "Register," your registered ID should appear on the page. Save this for future reference, but there's nothing you need to do with it. Instead, just try logging into your Google account again or using the Play Store to download an app — while it will still appear as "Uncertified," this should whitelist your device and bring back most functionality.

Option 2: Use the Yalp Store InsteadIf this method failed to grant you access to Google services, there's a decent workaround. It won't let you use Google apps that depend on Google Play Services or an account login, but you will be able to download apps from the Play Store, at the very least.The Yalp Store is free to download, but because it's an APK file, it'll have to be sideloaded. So make sure you have Unknown Sources enabled on your device, and grab the file from the link below, then open it and press "Install" when prompted.Download the Yalp Store (.apk) Once you've got it installed, using the Yalp Store is pretty simple — it has all the same apps you know and love from Google Play, since it's actually downloading the apps from the Play Store for you. If you needed to link out to a site in an email, your best bet was to grab a computer to get the job done. Well, close those laptops and shut down those PCs — Spark corrected this issue, implementing support for hyperlinking right into the app.Sadly, while Spark is finally available on both iOS and Android devices, this feature is currently only supported on iPhone. If you're an Android user happily using Spark for the first time, hang tight — Spark claims that hyperlinking will be an Android feature as soon as possible. Adding a Hyperlink to an Email AddressOne thing to note is that the chain link icon does not yet work for email addresses, so you can't add a "mailto:" hyperlink for your email address or anyone else's. If you attempt to add a "mailto:name@email.com" address or simply name@email.com address alone, it will add the "https://" in front of it, essentially breaking it.The only way to add a hyperlink to an email address that will open up a new draft in whatever email app the recipient is using is to use HTML in the signature (so you can't do this in the rest of the email's body). Luckily, Spark makes it easy to create a signature.Open the in-app "Settings," then tap "Signatures." Tap "Create New Signature" (or "Add Signature" if you already have some), then manually the following HTML code in the "Text" tab. The build.prop file in an Android device is home to many system-level values and settings. Everything from screen density to video recording quality is covered in this file, and people have been editing these entries to get new functionality and better performance since Android has existed.XDA user Thereassad has compiled a great set of these build.prop tweaks for the Galaxy S5 that will optimize performance in various ways—from battery life to data connectivity and graphics rendering, among others.The process of applying these tweaks is quite simple. As long as you're rooted, it's only a matter of copying text and pasting it into the build.prop file on your device. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.

Step 1: Download the Build.prop TweaksTo simplify things, I've added Thereassad's build.prop tweaks to a text file. So go ahead and grab your copy by pointing your Galaxy S5's browser to this link. The download should begin automatically and only take about a second to complete.

Step 2: Install a Root-Enabled File BrowserBecause of the fact that the build.prop file on your device is stored in the system partition, you'll need a root-enabled file browser to edit it. There are numerous free options in this category of apps on the Play Store, but the one I'll be demonstrating with today is called FX File Explorer. FX uses a separate add-on, called FX Root Add-On, to enable root capabilities, so you'll also need to install that. Once you've got both apps installed, go ahead and open FX and Accept the license agreement. You'll be shown a feature tour once you've done that, but you can close that out by tapping the back button on your phone.

Step 3: Copy the build.prop TweaksWith all of the requisite downloads taken care of, we're ready to get down to business. Start by heading to your Download folder from FX's home screen to locate the build.prop.edits text file you downloaded in Step #1. Long-press this file, then choose Open With. Select Text Editor from the next menu. There are a lot of different tweaks contained in this file, but don't let the seemingly endless lines of code overwhelm you. Tweaks are grouped into categories, and each of these groups are labeled with a plain-English title that is preceded by a # symbol.So for example, the group of lines beneath # Rendering Tweaks will speed up the process of displaying images on your device's screen. # GPU Acceleration and its corresponding lines will force your phone to use the Graphics Processor to decode video in accelerated mode. # Increase camera's photo and video recording quality will bump up the frame rate of your videos and decrease JPEG compression on photos taken with your phone.Have a look through these titles, and determine if the tweaks in each corresponding group are something you'd like to apply. If you come across a group of tweaks that you'd rather not utilize, simply delete the corresponding lines of code.Next, copy all remaining tweaks by pressing the Pencil-shaped icon at the top of the screen, then tapping Select All. From here, tap the pencil-shaped icon again and hit Copy. After you've done that, you can back out of the text editor. If it asks, choose Discard Changes.

Step 4: Add the Tweaks to Your build.prop FileNext up, head back to FX's home screen and tap System (Root). At this point, the app will ask for Superuser privileges, so Grant it those. On the next menu, tick the box next to I Understand and press OK. From here, head to the System folder, then tap the Lock icon at the top of the screen to mount it as read/write. Again, tick the box next to I understand and press OK. Now, scroll down to the bottom of this folder and long press the build.prop file. Choose Open With from the next menu, then Text Editor from the one after that. From here, tap any part of the screen, then move the cursor to an empty line somewhere in the file. It doesn't really matter where you put the cursor, it's just that you're about to paste a bunch of text into this file and you don't want to have it interrupt an existing line of code. With that done, just tap the Pencil-shaped button at the top of the screen again, but this time choose Paste. After that, hit the three-dot menu button and choose Save. You can now back out of the text editor and even close out FX entirely. The only thing left to do at this point is reboot your phone so that the changes can take effect.Tons of tweaks were applied with that single copy-and-paste job. Best of all, they won't even have to install any other apps or extensions to read or reply to the messages.By default, emails sent from one ProtonMail user to another use asymmetric cryptography to provide end-to-end encryption. The sender uses the recipient's public key to encrypt the message, then the recipient decrypts the message with his/her private key. Most do support it, so that's a good thing, but this also means that those services will be able to read the messages. When your message is composed, simply tap the "Encrypt for Outside" button (the lock icon) underneath the subject line, then set a password and confirm it.It's likely that your recipient will have no idea what the password will be unless you call or message it to them in another manner, which may be too much work. So you're better off adding a "hint" here so they can figure out the password without any more work on your part. Make the hint a question only they would know the answer to and have that answer be the password. Once you're satisfied with your password and hint, tap the "Apply" button. You should now see a green check mark next to the lock icon, which lets you know it's safe to send now. Now all that's left is to hit the send icon (the paper plane). As soon as you hit send, the countdown begins for its 28-day lifespan.

If they want to reply in a secure manner, they would tap the "Reply Securely" button in the browser to compose and send their reply. This will maintain end-to-end encryption. If they reply to the email in Gmail, it would only be encrypted with TLS. All emails in your ProtonMail inbox, whether sent from other ProtonMail users or non-ProtonMail users using the "Encrypt for Outside" or not, are stored encrypted on your devices.
