Binance 101: Fees & Fine Print You Need to Know Before Trading Bitcoins & Other Cryptocurrencies

Binance 101: Fees & Fine Print You Need to Know Before Trading Bitcoins & Other Cryptocurrencies
In just a few months, Binance has experienced explosive growth, overtaking its rivals to rank among the top three cryptocurrency exchanges in the world by trading volume. Without a doubt, Binance is now among the best sites for trading alt-coins like Ripple (XRP), Stellar (XLM), and NEM (XEM) to name a few.As with anything that involves trading with real money, it's extremely important for you to understand Binance's terms and get a clear picture of what you're getting yourself into before you start buying and selling cryptocurrencies. Though its user agreement may be easy enough to understand through careful reading, the fees charged by Binance for trading and withdrawing can be a little confusing. In addition to that, there are other important aspects to be aware of, such as regulations outside of Binance's control, as well as imposed limitations that are not covered by the user agreement. So we'll delve into it a little deeper to make it easier to understand and show you all the important details you need to know before opening a Binance account on your smartphone.Don't Miss: The Best Bitcoin Wallet Apps for Your Android Device
Binance Is Based Overseas with No Central LocationThough originally based in Hong Kong (an administrative region of China), Binance's CEO, Changpeng Zhao, has since moved his business to multiple locations that he won't fully disclose for security purposes. According to Mr. Zhao:In response to China's decisions, we are moving our IPs from Hong Kong to an offshore location. Now we have our IPs registered in BVI (British Virgin Islands) and other locations. So we are registered in multiple locations and we have people in multiple locations. That way we will never be affected by one regulatory body.
— Changpeng ZhaoThe move is in no doubt influenced by China's unclear stance regarding cryptocurrencies and exchanges that seem to be a subject of crackdowns on a regular basis. Though highly lucrative, the Chinese government is wary of the technology, which they argue provides a way for its citizens to skirt their tightly regulated currency to move money outside the country.

The App Is Available for Both Android & iOSSo far, Binance is the only major exchange to offer mobile apps for both Android and iOS. Binance is free to install, so head on over to either the iOS App or Google Play Store, or tap on the links provided below.Install Binance: Android | iOS For iPhone users in particular, it's worth noting that Binance has had a history of being removed form the App Store — either by Apple or by Binance themselves. So don't be surprised if it disappears from the iOS App Store yet again. That said, Binance has stated that the current version is its latest stable release, so grab it now while it's still available. If it gets taken off the App Store again, or if you don't mind dealing with some potential bugs in order to experience the latest that Binance has to offer, you always have the option of downloading the beta version instead. We have guide on installing the beta iOS app directly from Binance, so check it out below.Don't Miss: How to Install the Beta Binance App on Your iPhone
Dollars Are Not AcceptedBinance only supports cryptocurrency deposits and withdrawals on their exchange — this means you can't transfer fiat currency like USD or EUR in and out of Binance. So to use the app, you'll first have to buy BTC, LTC, or ETH using an app like Coinbase (or any other service that accepts traditional money), then transfer your newly acquired digital coin to Binance and start trading for alt-coins.Don't Miss: How to Transfer Cryptocurrency from Coinbase to Binance

There Are Different Types of Buy & Sell OrdersBinance makes trading cryptocurrency on your iPhone or Android relatively hassle-free, though it falls on you to do your research on your target alt-coin in order to minimize losses. There are two main ways to buy and sell digital coins within the app, namely limit and market orders. In a nutshell, limit orders let you buy or sell alt-coins at a specific price, which is then placed on the books until the order is fulfilled. For example, if you have 1,000 XLM and wish to sell them off once they reach $1 apiece, you would place a sell order for your XLM at that price, which will then be placed as an open order that you can view anytime by tapping on "Open Orders." Once XLM reaches your target price, the 1,000 XLM sell order you placed will be automatically processed and sold off. Due to market fluctuations, limit orders can take time to be fulfilled.Market orders are much simpler to execute and allow you to instantly buy or sell cryptocurrencies at their current price by tapping on either "Buy" or "Sell" after entering the desired amount. The main disadvantage of this method is the inherent risk of missing out on opportunities. For example, if you decide to pull the trigger and sell off 1 BCC at the market rate of $1,500 a coin, but the price continues to rise and eventually peaks at $2,000, you would've missed out on an extra $500.Don't Miss: How to Add Bitcoin & Ethereum Trading Pairs in Binance (1) Buying or selling via Limit Order lets you dictate the price, but can take some time to fulfill. (2) Placing orders via Market Price lets you buy or sell instantly, but risks missing out on potential gains or lower rates.

There Are Fees for TradingBinance charges a flat 0.1% fee for executing trades on their exchange, regardless of whether you're buying or selling and using limit or market orders for transactions. The flat fee is applied automatically once a buy or sell order is fulfilled, and is deducted from the end cryptocurrency. For example, If you bought 1,000 TRX using ETH as the base currency, the 0.1% fee of 1 TRX will be applied and automatically deducted from your order, netting you 999 TRX. Conversely, if you sold all your XLM holdings for exactly 1 BTC, the 0.1% fee of 0.001 BTC will be applied and net you .999 BTC.To show it in dollar terms, if you bought 10,000 TRX using BTC as the base currency with the going rate of $0.10 per TRX and $10,000 per BTC, you would pay 0.1 BTC ($1,000). Binance will then apply the 0.1% fee in TRX, which would come out to 10 TRX ($1.00), and net you 9,990 TRX ($999).To turn the tables around, if you exchanged 10,000 TRX for BTC at the same going rate as above, you'd get 0.1 BTC ($1,000). The 0.1% fee would then be applied in BTC, which would come out to 0.0001 BTC ($1.00), netting you 0.0999 BTC ($999). In essence, Binance's flat 0.1% fee means that you'll get charged 1 coin per 1,000, 10 per 10,000, 100 per 100,000, and so on, regardless of which currency you buy or sell. TRX order history showing a total of 1106 TRX ordered, with a total of 1.106 TRX (exactly 0.1%) deducted as trading fees, leaving me with 1104.894 TRX.
There's a Discount on Trading Fees with BNB (Limited Time)Binance currently offers a 50% discount on transaction fees, though the catch is you have to have enough of their digital coin — aptly named Binance Coin (BNB) — stored in your account to cover any fees. Basically, if you have enough BNB in your wallet, Binance will automatically shave 50% off their 0.1% fee on any trades you make, making it 0.05%. The fee will then be deducted off your BNB wallet. As Binance explains it:You sell ETH on ETH/BTC and receive 1 BTC. Fees are calculated from the currency you're receiving at a rate of 0.1%, so you owe Binance 0.001 BTC.From there, if you are opted in to paying fees with BNB, the 50% discount is applied (0.001 BTC -> 0.0005 BTC) and then the exchange rate applied. If the exchange rate is roughly 150 BNB = 1 BTC, the fee would then be 0.075 BNB. If you have 0.075 or more BNB in your account, that's the fee you pay. Otherwise you pay 0.001 BTC.You sell ETH on ETH/BTC and receive 1 BTC. Otherwise you pay 0.001 BTC.
— Binance/RedditThe discount will also apply on your initial purchase of BNB, so if you buy 10 BNB with ETH and the and the current exchange rate is 100 BNB per ETH, the fee would be halved from 0.1 to 0.05 BNB. The discount decreases over time, however, and is cut by half every year for four years, then disappears entirely on the fifth year. It is also currently unknown how long Binance will offer the discount as new users stream in, so stay tuned as more concrete information surfaces regarding this matter.
There Are Fees for Making WithdrawalsIn addition to charging fees for executing cryptocurrency trades, Binance also charges a fee for making withdrawals out of their exchange, and there's a minimum amount that needs to be met or exceeded before Binance allows that transfer. Both the minimum amount and fees vary from coin to coin. As an example, here's the minimum withdrawal amounts and fees for the four major cryptocurrencies that you can transfer to Coinbase:Bitcoin: 0.002 BTC minimum withdrawal, transaction fee of 0.0005 BTC Bitcoin Cash: 0.002 BCC minimum withdrawal, a transaction fee of 0.001 BCC Ethereum: 0.1 ETCH minimum withdrawal, transaction fee of 0.01 ETH Litecoin: 0.02 minimum withdrawal, transaction fee of 0.01 LTC It's worth noting that withdrawal fees are not set in stone and are subject to change due to blockchain conditions. We highly recommend you check out Binance's full list of available cryptocurrencies and their fees to stay up to date, as they can suddenly change due to network congestion or downtime. Thankfully, network fees associated with blockchain transfers are included in Binance's withdrawal fees, regardless of digital currency.Regardless of cryptocurrency, withdrawal fees are automatically subtracted from your withdrawal amount once you finalize the transfer. For example, If you have 20 BTC in Binance and wish to withdraw 1 BTC at the going rate $10,000 per coin, Binance will apply the 0.0005 BTC fee ($0.50) to your 1 BTC withdrawal and won't touch the 19 BTC that's left in your exchange wallet, netting you exactly 0.9995 BTC ($9,999.50).Keep in mind that minimum withdrawal amounts can be almost as low as the fees with some digital currencies (BCC and LTC, for example). With these coins, it's obviously not a good idea to withdraw the minimum amount, as the fee will eat up a significant chunk of your withdrawal. To put it into perspective, at the going rate of $1,000 per coin, the minimum withdrawal amount of 0.002 BCC would come out to $2. The withdrawal fee of 0.001 (equivalent to $1.00) would then be applied, effectively halving your withdrawal and netting you a paltry $1.

No Spending Limits, but There Are Withdrawal LimitsBinance doesn't place any limits on making deposits or executing trades on its exchange, though it does have a daily limit on the amount of cryptocurrency you can withdraw. For unverified users, Binance has a withdrawal limit equivalent to 2 BTC — $20,000, give or take a few thousand — which replenishes every 24 hours. If you plan to do some high volume trading, you can increase your daily withdrawal limit to 100 BTC (at least $1 million) by submitting personal documents such as your social security and government-issued ID to verify your identity. To increase your withdrawal limits even further, you'll need to contact Binance.
You Need 2FA to Make WithdrawalsThough you can sign in, execute trades, and make deposits on Binance, you'll have to enable two-factor authentication (2FA) on your account before making withdrawals. While users from China have the option of receiving SMS-based authentication to get into their accounts securely, US residents have to rely on Google Authenticator to stay safe from hacks.Linking your Binance account with Google Authenticator is a straightforward process — download the Google Authenticator app for iPhone or Android, enable it on Binance through your web browser and note the secret key that's provided, then add Binance to your Google Authenticator app. If you'd like a more thorough guide on this topic, be sure to check out the following link.Don't Miss: How to Secure Your Binance Account with Google Authenticator
Transaction Times Are Fast, but Transfer Times Can VaryWhile transaction times are extremely fast when executing trades on Binance, transfer times for deposits and withdrawals between Binance and your personal wallets can wildly vary from coin to coin. While lesser known alt-coins like XLM and EOS have snappy transaction times that take only seconds, seasoned coins such as BTC and ETH have been known to take up to five hours or more to transfer, due in large part to the sheer number of transactions being processed on their blockchain.
You Are Responsible if Your Account Gets HackedLike Coinbase, Binance places sole responsibility on its users when it comes to keeping their account and other important personal information secure, as evidenced by Section 2 of their User Agreement. This means you should use security measures such as strong passwords and two-factor authentication to keep cybercriminals out.Don't Miss: How to Create Stronger Passwords Keeping your wallet as secure as possible can't be stressed enough, because once your bitcoins, bitcoin cash, litecoins, or ether are gone, your chances of getting them back are almost zero. To back this up, Binance doesn't currently offer any form of insurance policy to help cover any losses due to hacks and security breaches.
No Promises Regarding Overall SecurityIn addition to the current lack of insurance to help cover individual losses due to hacks, Binance makes no mention of safeguards and security measures that it may have in place to guard against potential breaches that can result in monetary loss or identity theft. The closest mention of any security protocols comes to us courtesy of Reddit, which is still pretty vague:...Regarding security, Binance platform is engineered from the ground up with security, efficiency, speed and scalability taken into utmost consideration. The team has decades of combined experience building and maintaining a world class financial systems.

Binance Use Is Restricted in Some StatesUnfortunately, not everyone in the US can technically use Binance to buy and sell digital currencies. Both New York and Washington states have laws that tightly regulate cryptocurrency exchanges. As a result, several popular exchanges such as Poloniex and Kraken have placed a ban on users with IP addresses that originate from these states.Despite these prohibitions, however, several users from New York and Washington state report being able to trade cryptocurrencies just fine using Binance. This means the popular exhcange has yet to impose an IP address ban for these two states, and as long as residents stay under the radar by not verifying their residences, they should be able to continue to do so.That said, we highly recommend that you transfer all your cryptocurrency holdings to a secure, personal wallet as soon as possible if you live in either NY or WA. Because cryptocurrency trading on a non-compliant exchange is illegal in those states, Binance might ban your IP Address at any time, which could result in losing all or part of your funds.
Cryptocurrency Is Subject to Capital Gains TaxesBack in March 2014, the IRS declared cryptocurrency as property rather than currency. This clear definition — one that made cryptocurrency akin to stocks and real estate — made bitcoins and alt-coins subject to capital gains taxes. These taxes vary in rates, and primarily depend on how long you hold a virtual currency. For instance, if you bought BTC for $10,000 and sold it for $30,000 in less than a year, then you are subject to short-term capital gains for the $20,000 you made and owe the government up to 37% — a whopping $7,400 — in taxes. If that same transaction happens at least a year or more after your initial purchase, long-term capital gains will then apply and can range between 15% to 20%. So if you profited $20,000 in a span of at least a year from your initial $10,000 BTC purchase, then you'll need to pay the government around $3,000–4,000 in taxes, depending on your income and marital status. In addition to this, the GOP tax reform bill has closed a loophole that previously let you freely exchange cryptocurrencies — such as buying ETH with BTC — without the fear of being taxed. This is a significant development if you trade cryptocurrencies, as all digital currency transactions can now be taxed by the government. How individual trades will be taxed, however, remain unclear. As such, we'll update this section as a clearer picture emerges regarding this matter.
Binance Can Suspend New User RegistrationsWith the addition of an astounding 240,000 new users in a single day, it comes as no surprise that Binance has struggled to keep pace with demand. As new users were flooding in, Binance temporarily suspended new user registration to help with server demand. While Binance has since reopened at the time of this writing, it's only on a limited basis. So if you have trouble registering a new account, we recommend trying once a day, as the site will only let an undisclosed amount of new users in on a day to day basis until it's back to running at peak efficiency. We'll be sure to keep you posted as congestion eases, so check back regularly to stay up to date.

Binance Pays You for Referring Friends & FamilyBinance has a referral program that rewards you with 50% of your referral's trading fees as commission for the first month of his or her trading. To refer a friend or loved one, either share your referral ID code (which can be found in the Account tab in your Binance app), or have them scan the QR code in Account –> Referral Program using their smartphone before they register and start trading. Bear in mind, however, that some users have reported running into some issues on Binance regarding their referral commissions, so make sure to stay on top of your earnings. Don't hesitate to contact Binance if you encounter some discrepancies with regards to your commissions — you did earn them, after all.Don't Miss: The 4 Best Phones for Privacy & SecurityFollow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Flipboard Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Flipboard

How To: Reveal Saved Website Passwords in Chrome and Firefox with This Simple Browser Hack

The number of passwords I have for different websites and emails is easily in the triple digits. And if I had to actually remember all of those individual passwords, I would be locked out of accounts on a daily basis. That's why I use the "remember my password" feature whenever I can. Nearly all of my passwords are saved in my browser's history, so all I need to do is press enter. But sometimes I forget what's behind those little black dots. Image via ibmsystemsmag.com After you clear your history and delete your cookies, those passwords are no longer saved. So, after months of never having to enter a password, you've forgotten what all of your passwords are!So, it's important that you keep track of your passwords, otherwise you'll have to create a new one or rack your brain hoping to finally remember what it was.You could always use a password manager like LastPass and make life easier on yourself in the future, but if you don't like that idea, here's a little trick for Google Chrome and Firefox that will reveal what your saved black-dotted password is.

Revealing Passwords with Inspect ElementIn both Chrome and Firefox, you can use the Inspect Element tool to uncover saved passwords on any website. Simply go to the site where you have a password saved and highlight those little black dots. Once those dots are highlighted, right-click and select the Inspect Element option. When you click on Inspect Element, you will be able to see the webpage's code. This new frame should appear at the bottom of your browser window. Since you have already highlighted the part you are interested in, the password section, it will automatically be highlighted, as you can see in the image above. If you just see the black bar in Firefox, you may have to open the Markup Panel, as seen below. In order to unveil the saved password, you are going to have to alter some text. Locate where it says type ="password". Select the text password and hit Delete. Now, replace it with the word text. Now, press Enter. The second you do, the password box that was previously filled with those standard security dots will now show the complete text of whatever password was saved there.Obviously, this could be used to reveal other people's passwords, too. Like, if your fooling around on your friend's computer, or if some bozo actually saved his/her password on a public computer. Boy, what you could do with somebody else's password!
Other MethodsBelieve it or not, but this "Inspect Element" maneuver is just one of the many ways to reveal saved passwords in a browser. The basic approach would be to just ask for them in the preferences. Another trick is using a JavaScript injection, but that's a little more complicated.

How To: Add the Control Center Style Quick Settings from iOS 7 onto Your Samsung Galaxy S3
There are very few things Android users would want to borrow from Apple's iOS, but let's move beyond the fanboy/girl biases and admit that Apple actually does a few things pretty well. One of those things is looks, and the new iOS 7 looks pretty amazing to me.While the upcoming iOS 7 does have plenty of new features (we've been testing out the beta version for the last several weeks), one of the best additions is the Control Center, which actually mimics the Quick Settings that most Android devices already have. The only significant difference is the look, and I happen to like iOS 7's better. If you want to put the Control Center version of Quick Settings on your Samsung Galaxy S3 or other Android device, well, there's an app for that. Best of all—it doesn't replace your current Quick Settings, it just gives you another option. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.

How to Get Control Center Style Quick SettingsThe aptly named Control Center is a free Android app by Hi Tools Studio. It's more or less an exact clone, including the translucent frosted glass effect and pastel colors.

Initial Setup and PreferencesOnce you've downloaded the app from Google Play, you'll need to set up a few of the Control Center's features. Firstly, you must activate the app by tapping the Start Service tab. From there, you can head over to Touchable Area and adjust the height and width of the pull-up tab. You can move the Touchable Area to the left or right side, or keep it in the center. If you don't want to see it at all, you can get rid of it completely and still access the Control Center by swiping up from the bottom of the screen. You can also decide if you want vibration on or off when the Control Center is accessed.

App ConfigurationSince this is basically a complete port of the Control Center, some apps are not setup automatically. The Camera and Clock icons, for example, would normally take you to Apple's camera and clock apps, so you'll have to configure the settings to open the Android versions instead. As the app suggests, just long press on an icon to update and configure it to the stock Android app, or a third-party one if you prefer. After you tap and hold on the icon you want to update, a list of applications should pop up. From this list you will select which app or widget you want to launch for the icon in the Control Center. In this case, we would select the Clock and Camera apps, respectively. Now, when you click on the Clock or Camera icon from the Control Center, those apps will actually launch.
What Do You Think of Control Center for Android?Control Center is a great iOS 7 replica for folks looking for a snazzy and quick way to access settings and utilities. It's free and very easy to set up, so be sure to check it out. Plus, the regular Quick Settings you're used to by swiping down the from the Status bar are still there, if you want to use them instead sometimes. The two actually work in unison. What do you think of Control Center? Know of any other cool iOS 7 ports for Android devices? Let us know in the comments section. And if there are any Galaxy S3 owners who want to replicate other iOS features, there are several apps to help you turn your device into an iPhone clone.

How To: Get Custom Themes for YouTube on Android Even a True Black OLED Theme
When Google finally gave us a dark theme for YouTube, it was a bit disappointing. They didn't use a pure black background, reducing some of the battery savings you'd get with an OLED panel. But with the help of another app, we can fix this, and not only get a real dark mode, but other colors as well.Because the version of YouTube on the Play Store doesn't include any way of theming the app, a modified version was needed. YouTube Vanced is an altered version of YouTube which offers not only the same features and overall UI in the regular app, but lots of extra tweaks as well. And it is with the help of this app that we can get the black theme we've always desired, along with some other funky colors you might like.
Step 1: Check Your ArchitectureThe app we are installing is a modified version of YouTube. At the time of writing, there are 59 versions available, many of which will only work with a certain CPU architecture. Therefore, to avoid the trouble of trying and failing to install a version which won't work with your phone, you'll need to know what kind of processor type you have. Most phones from the last three years use ARM64 architecture, while older phones used ARM. It's very rare to have a mobile CPU with x86 architecture. But if you're still unsure of which type of processor you have, we have a guide that will help you find out:Don't Miss: How to See What Type of Processor You Have

Step 2: Download a Themed YouTube VancedOnce you know your processor architecture, you can now download YouTube Vanced. This app is not hosted on the Play Store and therefore requires that your phone is set to allow sideloaded apps. Now, head to this link from your phone. First, grab MicroG (an open source version of Android Services that lets you log into YouTube Vanced) by tapping the second entry under "MicroG APK Download." Then, scroll up and tap the search field under the "APK Download" header. Type in the color theme you want for YouTube: either Black, Dark, Blue, or Pink.Using the architecture you found in Step 1, choose the newest version of the app from the list that either matches your phone's architecture or displays "All" under "Architecture." After downloading the APKs for YouTube Vanced and MicroG, install both by opening the files from your notification tray, then tapping "Install." It's worth noting here that if you downloaded the Blue or Pink theme, the installed app will be labeled "YouTube Blue" or "YouTube Pink," respectively. However, the Dark or Black theme variants will be labeled "YouTube Vanced." You will now also have two YouTube apps on your phone, the default YouTube app and YouTube Vanced. You can easily hide the second app using a custom launcher such as Nova.Don't Miss: How to Hide App Icons with Nova Launcher Be are that because you're sideloading this app, there's a chance that it could contain malware. Unlike apps reviewed by Google on the Play Store, you are trusting the developers here. This is a very popular app with a large community of users, so you should be fine, but please, download at your own risk.

Step 3: Turn on the ThemeNow, open the YouTube app (whether YouTube Blue, YouTube Pink, or YouTube Vanced) and in the upper-right corner, select your profile picture (or the silhouette icon), then choose "Settings." Select Vanced Settings," then choose "Layout Settings."The last two entries on the list will be the "X watch" and "X theme" with X representing the color of the theme you chose. Select both to enable their toggle and enable the new theme. The pink theme is different from other themes. Unlike the others which default to the standard white background look of YouTube, with YouTube Pink, there is pink text even before enabling the theme. Specifically, the title of videos, sub-menus for videos, and channel names under "Stories" will use pink text. However, once the theme is enabled, the background will be pink. Text will alternate between white and black with titles of videos in white and playback controls in black. Additionally, toggles are blue when activated and gray when deactivated. If you decided on the blue theme, the background switches to blue and text alternates between white and black, with black mostly used for buttons and white for most text. Toggles are black when activated and gray when deactivated. The dark theme is the same "almost black" color found in the dark theme in the unmodified YouTube app. The background isn't actually black, so OLED panels don't get as much battery savings (though they can still save up to 60% with this theme). Text is either white or gray, with buttons mostly gray and video titles using white. Toggles are blue when activated and gray when off. For OLED users, the black theme is your best option. With this theme, the background is truly black which means pixels are turned off, thus saving the most possible battery life. The colors of text, buttons, and toggles are the same as the dark mode. How To: WiFi Camera Lets You Snap Photos on Your iPhone Using Someone Else's iPhone Camera

An influx of creative photography apps has struck iOS 6 since its release, and developer Daniel Amitay has now added to the stream of cool photo applications with WiFi Camera, a new remote-photography tool. The app works by linking up two iOS devices (iPhone or iPad) through Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. One person sends an invite to the other, and from there, can stream what the other person's camera (front and rear) is looking at. When setup, either person can take a picture with their device, capturing the image from the other camera. Images via wonderhowto.com Note: The stream will be blurry, but the picture it takes will retain its full clear resolution. This application could be really useful for taking group shots when no one else is around to take it. Setup one person's camera, then use yours to remote control it from the group. Genius. The application automatically searches for any devices that are running WiFi Camera and will show the options at the top of the screen. The application is free and you can find it in the App Store. If you upgraded to an iPhone 5, it makes you think twice about selling your old iPhone 4.

How To: Make LEDs Dance to Techno Music

How To: Make LEDs Dance to Techno Music
You must have seen some expensive mp3 players and CD players which have LEDs fixed on them and they dance to the tune looking really pretty.Imagine you could make your own LEDs and configure them to dance to Daft Punk or Swedish House Mafia. I'm going to tell you how it can be done at your home and with a lot less money. You just need a few components and a little bit of concentration before we can get the party started!
Step 1: Get Your Components and EquipmentThere are a few things you may need to start with. Some, you might find in your home; others are easily and cheaply available at your nearest electronic component shop.LEDs An Old Headphone/Hands Free Set Transistor (TIP-31) Resistors (500 ohm and 1k ohm) PCB/Vero Boards Soldering Iron and Soldering Wire Wire and Wire Cutter AA Batteries/one 9V Battery (The use of any battery depends on how many LEDs you are using and the connection scheme (parallel of series) A series connection will need more power a parallel configuration like I am using here will require less energy)

Step 2: Connecting the Circuit Follow the steps below and be sure to read the safety precautions I have mentioned at the end.Place all LEDs on the Vero board, pins down. Take care of the LED polarity (the longer end is the anode!). Connect them in a parallel configuration by soldering all the negative ends together and then soldering all the positive ends in the same fashion as shown in the circuit diagram above. Then connect all the positive ends that are soldered together to the collector of the transistor (take care of the pin configuration of TIP-31 as given earlier). Connect all the negative ends (which are soldered together) to the positive end of the battery. The base of the transistor is to be connected to the 500 ohm resistor and the emitter to the negative end of the battery. Take the old handsfree that you have and cut off one earphone. Out come the two strands. Solder both strands across the resistor (Polarity does not matter here). All you now need is to plug in the audio jack in to your iPod or mp3 player and enjoy the lightening music!
Step 3: Make It Look GoodIf you want to improve it aesthetically you could probably improvise with a plastic/cardboard box and make some holes through it and place the Vero board inside it such that the LEDs show at the top of the box and then you could spray-paint it, well, golden or silver, whatever you like!
Step 4: Remember Safety! In the case of LEDs, polarity matters where with the ear phone strands it does not. Handle LEDs with care because they are susceptible to burning by a violent current surge. In case of a 9V battery, a resistor of 1kohm can be placed in series with the battery if the LED's are susceptible to burning.

How To: Install Adobe Flash Player on Your HTC One to Play Flash Games, Stream Amazon Instant Videos, & More

How To: Install Adobe Flash Player on Your HTC One to Play Flash Games, Stream Amazon Instant Videos, & More
Chrome has some built-in Flash support, which is great, but sometimes it just doesn't work—and it doesn't work for everything. Unfortunately, the Flash Player plugin was discontinued by Adobe back in the days of Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0), and you can't get it on Google Play. However, you can still install the latest version of Adobe Flash Player on your HTC One, albeit without official support. This will let you do things like watch Amazon Prime instant videos and even play a few Flash games. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.

Step 1: Enable Unknown SourcesSince this isn't available on Google Play, you'll need to grant your phone the ability to install apps from third-party sources. To do so, go to Settings -> Security and make sure Unknown Sources is checked. Image via wonderhowto.com

Step 2: Download the Flash Player PluginNow download the last Flash Player APK release directly from Adobe using this link (v 11.1.115.69). You can find all of the archived Flash Player versions on their site.

Step 3: Install Flash PlayerIf you downloaded it on your phone, you can just tap the notification in your Notification tray when it finishes downloading, or find it in your Download folder. If you downloaded it on your computer, you can transfer it to over via USB and hunt it down with a file manager, or better yet, use AirDroid to install it from your computer wirelessly.

Step 4: Install a Compatible BrowserDepending on your current ROM, the normal browser might work with the Flash plugin. For those that don't, you can download an alternative, and I use Boat Browser (free on Google Play). In Boat Browser, go to Settings, Settings again, Page Content Settings, and Enable flash/plugins. Choose Always on, and Flash content will load automatically when you visit pages. On Demand means you have to tap content before it loads.
That's It!Flash is easy to install if you want to play some games without having to download apps such as Kongregate Arcade, or so you can finally watch Amazon Instant Videos, since there is no dedicated app for it yet.If you don't like Boat Browser, you can also try out Firefox for Android (also free on Google Play).

How To: Download APK Files to Sideload on Any Android Device

How To: Download APK Files to Sideload on Any Android Device
Sideloading apps on Android is incredibly easy—you just have to enable "Unknown sources" in your device's Security settings, then you're free to run an APK installer file to get the app installed. As simple as that sounds, the trouble comes when you're trying to find an APK to install. Now, thanks to a new desktop program from the development team at Onyxbits, downloading APKs with your Mac, Linux, or Windows computer is as easy as searching the Google Play Store. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.

Step 1: Download RaccoonOnyxbits' software is called Raccoon, and it essentially acts as a desktop front-end for the Google Play Store. As such, you'll need a computer to use this software, but it's available for all major desktop operating systems.First up, head to this link from any web browser, then scroll down to the bottom of the page to find the download links. For Mac and Linux users, download the raccoon-3.3.jar file, but note that you'll need to have the Java Runtime Environment installed to run the program. Windows users, on the other hand, can simply hit up the raccoon-3.3.exe link.

Step 2: Log into Your Google AccountWith the exe or jar file saved to your computer, simply launch it to run Raccoon. You may have to enter administrator credentials or verify that you'd like to run this file, so take care of that, then you'll be greeted by a login screen. From here, enter your Google account credentials, then click the "Login" button. The GSF ID field lets you enter your device's hardware ID number, but this is not required.

Step 3: Download APKsOnce you've logged into your Google account, you'll be taken to Raccoon's main menu. From here, use the search bar at the top of the screen to search the Google Play Store for any app. After that, simply click the Download button next to a search result to save that app's associated APK file to your hard drive.

Step 4: Transfer the APK to Your Android Device & Install ItAPKs that you've downloaded with this program will be saved in a folder named "Raccoon." Since the location of this folder can vary depending on your operating system and version, the easiest way to find it would be to search your computer for the word "Raccoon." From here, open the folder named "Raccoon." From the Raccoon folder, head to the archives subfolder, then default, and finally apk_storage. Here you'll find a set of folders for any APKs you've downloaded. Simply copy the APKs over to your Android device using a USB data cable. On your Android device, use any file browser app to launch the APK, and you'll be greeted by Android's standard installer interface. What apps have you downloaded using Raccoon? Let us know in the comment section below, or drop us a line on Android Hacks' Facebook or Twitter, or Gadget Hacks' Facebook, Google+, or Twitter.

How To: Upload, Buy, Send, Receive, & Redeem Almost Any Gift Card on Your Phone

How To: Upload, Buy, Send, Receive, & Redeem Almost Any Gift Card on Your Phone
Big box stores love to sell gift cards, and as consumers, we snap them up almost as quickly as they can be printed. This industry has become rather profitable, though, because portions of the gift card balances often go unused. When we receive a gift card, we tend to tuck it away in our wallets, and sometimes forget about them altogether, only to let them expire. Some states, like California, have even passed laws that ban gift card expiration dates to combat this exact issue. Then there are times when a part of the gift card balance is used, and the remaining value just isn't enough to justify holding onto the card anymore. The development team at Gyft has soured on these trends, and created an app that hopes to put an end to gift card waste. With support for over 200 retailers, their mobile gift card wallet allows you to store your current gift cards on the cloud for safe keeping and easier use, and even buy and send gift cards to your family and friends. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.

Step 1: Install GyftGyft is available for free on both the Google Play Store and iOS App Store. Hit the links or simply search your device's respective app store to get it installed. For the rest of this guide, I'll be using the Android version, but the process is very similar if not identical for iPhone users.

Step 2: Log in or Create an AccountWhen you first launch the app, you'll be shown a quick overview guide. Flip through this, then you'll have to either log in with Facebook or Google+, or create a new account with your email address. If you go the email route, you'll have to choose a password that contains at least 8 characters and uses at least 2 special characters. As a bonus for signing up for an account, Gyft gives you a free $5 credit for use towards purchasing gift cards. When you arrive at the app's main menu after signing up, tap this entry, then "scratch" the code, and an email with instructions for redeeming this credit will be dispatched to you.

Step 3: Add Your Existing Gift CardsFrom Gyft's main menu, tap the "Upload" button to add an existing gift card to your mobile wallet. From here, either scroll through the list to find your card's retailer, or use the search button at the top of the screen to find or manually add a store. Next, enter the card number and PIN on the following screen. These can usually be found by scratching off the silver painted portion on the back of your gift card. When you're done here, tap "Add to wallet," then you'll see your gift card listed on Gyft's main screen. To redeem this gift card at the retailer later, simply tap this entry. A barcode that is capable of being scanned at most stores will be generated, and all you have to do is allow the cashier to scan this to redeem your gift card. Note that some retailers do not have scanners, so Gyft recommends that you hang on to your physical gift card just in case.

Step 4: Purchase Gift Cards & Send to Your FriendsIf you'd like to buy a gift card for yourself, tap the "Buy" button at the bottom of the screen. Next, simply select the retailer from the provided list. Noticeably missing from this list is Walmart, which was removed early last year. After that, use the popup to adjust the value for your gift card. Tap "Buy" when you're ready, then choose your payment method. Supported payment methods include Google Wallet, PayPal, credit or debit cards, and Bitcoin. To send an electronic gift card to a friend, tap the "Send" button at the bottom of Gyft's main menu. From here, choose the recipient from your contacts list. Next, select the retailer, then adjust the value for the gift card and press "Buy." You can also select to buy a Gyft card, which lets the recipient buy any gift card they want, though, they will need to use the Android or web app to redeem the code. After that, you'll get a chance to set a custom greeting—you can even record a quick video to send alongside your electronic gift card. After tapping "Proceed" here, you can choose how your recipient will be notified of their new gift card. Tap "Proceed" once more, then choose your payment method and your gift card will be sent instantly. With Gyft, we no longer have to worry about keeping track of cumbersome physical gift cards, and sending electronic gift cards is easier than ever. How many gift cards did you add to your mobile wallet? Let us know in the comment section below, or drop us a line on Facebook, Google+, or Twitter.

How To: Easily Root Your Nexus 7 Tablet Running Android 4.3 Jelly Bean (Windows Guide)

How To: Easily Root Your Nexus 7 Tablet Running Android 4.3 Jelly Bean (Windows Guide)
The new Jelly Bean is out in the wild, but if you've installed Android 4.3 from stock, you'll notice rooting is now not possible. If you miss the ad-blocking capabilities of AdBlock Plus, how Seeder made apps snappier, or the convenience of backing up with Titanium Backup, you'll need to get rooted.UPDATE: If you have Android 4.4 on your tablet, or recently purchased a 2013 Nexus 7, check out our newer guide on how to root the Nexus 7 tablet running Android 4.4 KitKat instead.Thankfully, there's a new rooting method for Android Jelly Bean 4.3 to get you softModded. Let's jump right in. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.

Step 1: Enable USB DebuggingBegin by enabling "USB debugging" on your Nexus 7. This is the most important step because the toolkit we'll use in a later step will automate everything for you.Enable "USB debugging" by going to Settings -> Developer Options -> USB Debugging. If you don't see the Developer Options, go to Settings -> About Device and tap your device Build Number repeatedly until these options unlock.

Step 2: Download SuperSUOn your tablet, head over to this link on Chainfire to download the latest version of SuperSU. We'll be manually flashing the root files using a custom recovery. Next, head over to your PC, and plug in your Nexus 7 tablet.

Step 3: Download & Install Wugs Nexus ToolkitYep, it's every softModder's favorite toolkit for the Nexus 7 (or any Nexus device for that matter). If you haven't already installed WugFresh's Nexus Root Toolkit (we installed when manually updating to Jelly Bean 4.3), you can grab the newest version over at the official WugFresh website. For those who don't know, a toolkit has all the tools and drivers needed to do any softModding job. Whether it's rooting, bootloader unlocking, ROM flashing, or restoring—a toolkit does it all, with ease and simplicity.

Step 4: Set Up the ToolkitInstall the toolkit like you would any other Windows program (sorry, this will not work for Mac users). Launch the toolkit when done and a window will pop up asking for your device model. Choose your device from the list along with its OS version (any build) and click "Apply." Currently, Wugs Nexus Root Toolkit hasn't been updated to root 4.3, so we'll just be doing it manually. Now, Head over to "Initial Setup" and click "Full Driver Installation...." Follow the guide provided in the toolkit to install the required drivers for your Nexus 7. I recommend "Driver Solution #3," but any of the three options should work. The toolkit has a built-in guide with pictures that will aid you in installing the drivers. Installing drivers properly is the most important step (aside from making sure USB Debugging is turned on, of course).

Step 5: Unlocking the BootloaderClick on "Unlock" to unlock the bootloader. Everything will be automated, so just follow its lead.
WARNINGTHIS DELETES EVERYTHING ON YOUR NEXUS 7! So, make sure you backup before continuing, unless you don't mind a fresh start.

Step 6: Getting RootedAfterwards, tap "Launch" under Advanced Utilities. A new window will appear. Tap "Boot Custom Recovery Temporarily." Give it a few moments and your tablet will automatically launch the TWRP recovery. Use TWRP to flash the ZIP file downloaded earlier.Tap Install Tap the SuperSU ZIP file Swipe to confirm flash Tap Reboot Once your tablet is fully booted up, open the app drawer and you'll find SuperSU, which gives you superuser access to your Nexus 7 tablet. Your tablet is now fully rooted and ready for any softMods you throw at it. Whether it's installing a custom ROM, flashing a different custom recovery, or taking full advantage of the wide range of apps that require root, you're now ready for all of what Android has to offer.Tell us if it worked for you, and feel free to ask questions below.
