How To: 1-Click Root Many Android Devices with Kingo Android Root

How To: 1-Click Root Many Android Devices with Kingo Android Root
To Android users, especially advanced ones, rooting their phones or tablets is becoming a necessity. Rooting Android could be complicated, if you do it all by yourself, even with a step-by-step tutorial. However, what Kingo Android Root offers you is a true one-click experience when rooting your Android.
What Is Android Rooting?Android Rooting, in a nutshell, is a modification process to the original system in which the limitations are removed and full-access is allowed, thus resulting in the ability to alter or replace system applications and settings, run specialized apps, and even facilitate the removal and replacement of the device's operating system with a custom one.
What Can You Do After Rooting Your Android? After rooting, you can install a custom ROM and recovery, customize your system with beautiful themes and fonts, increase internal memory by moving all of your apps to an SD card, increase your RAM, overclock and undervolt your device, hack games, remove bloatware, install fantastic root-only apps like Titanium Backup, Greenify, AdAway, and such.
Pros & Cons of Android RootingPros: Basically, the benefits that rooting your Android device can offer are all about acquiring high-level permissions with which you could overcome all limitations and do modifications as you like.Cons: Rooting immediately voids your phone's warranty. Rooting involves the risk of "bricking" your phone.
How to Root Your Android Devices in One Click?Using Kingo Android Root is extremely simple, but I'll elaborate it down to every little detail, so please bear with me.You can see the list of devices that Kingo supports here. The list is incomplete and not up-to-date, it does not necessarily mean not-support if your device is not in the list. If you have any doubt about your device being support, feel free to contact us.
Step 1: Check These PrerequisitesA Windows-based computer with Internet access. USB cable; the original one is recommended. Device powered on with at least 50% battery level.

Step 2: Install & Launch KingoKingo Android Root is a free download that is available here. After installing it on your computer, double-click the icon on your desktop to launch it—you will see an interface as shown below.

Step 3: Manually Enable USB Debugging Mode on Your AndroidAlthough the very aim of Kingo Android Root is to offer a true one-click rooting experience, this step falls on users. USB debugging mode is a developer option to facilitate a connection between an Android device and a computer with Android SDK (software development kit), which is usually hidden in Android 4.2.X and higher versions. How to Enable USB Debugging Mode on Android?Android 2.0 - 2.3.X Go to Settings -> Applications -> Development -> USB debugging. Android 3.0 - 4.1.X Go to Settings -> Developer Options -> USB debugging. Android 4.2.X and higher, including Android 5.0 Lollipop Go to App Drawer -> Settings -> About Phone -> Build number. Then, tap the Build number 7 times to become developer. Afterward, go to Settings -> Developer options -> USB debugging. More info on how to enable USB debugging mode can be found here.

Step 4: Connect Your Android Device to PC via USB CableThere will be a prompt window that appears on your device's screen. Click "OK" to allow USB debugging from your computer. Kingo will automatically install the device driver (if it is not installed already), recognize your device model, and show the root status of your device.

Step 5: Click "ROOT" When You Are Ready to GoPlease read the notifications carefully and be fully aware of its advantages and disadvantages before you proceed. It will take a few minutes for Kingo to run its course.

Step 6: Root Succeeded & Click "Finish" to RebootKingo has rooted millions of Android devices from almost all manufacturers and carriers. The general method that Kingo employs during rooting is an exploit (or vulnerability) of Android firmware.Theoretically, it should not cause data loss, but bad things happen, and Kingo is not responsible for any damage. We will exert every effort to make this software safe and easy to use. As to device support, we are trying to cover every brand and every firmware version, but it is impossible to cover it all, and those vulnerabilities we rely on to root your device will be patched by authorities in later firmware.

Kingo Android Root Also Has "Remove Root Function" Built-InKingo has built-in "Remove Root" function as well. Connect your device to your computer via your USB cable and grant "Superuser Request" for an ADB shell on your device. After your device is recognized by Kingo, you should see your Root Status as "YES" with the "Remove Root" button on the interface. Just click it and wait.

Snapchat 101: How to Use Your Selfies to Create a Bitmoji Deluxe
Accompanying Snapchat's core features, like editing snaps and applying filters to them, are Bitmojis. Bitmojis are small avatars that you create in your own likeness and use all throughout Snapchat. Formerly, there were two "styles" that you could pick from to make your Bitmoji: Bitstrips style and Bitmoji style. Now, Snapchat is rolling out a third style that will redefine the way you use Bitmojis.Bitmoji Deluxe is a new style that builds on the existing Bitmoji style (now called Bitmoji Classic). Snapchat boasts that this new style "includes hundreds of new ways to customize your Bitmoji," such as "additional skin tones, hairstyles, hair colors, facial features, accessories, and more!" Additionally, you'll be able to take a selfie to use as a reference point when putting together your new Bitmoji Deluxe to help with the extra control you'll be given. If you don't see the features outlined below, just update the Bitmoji app for iPhone or Android to try the new Bitmoji Deluxe.

Step 1: Choose 'Bitmoji Deluxe'If you've never used Bitmoji before, check out our guide on it — then come back here. From the main page inside the Bitmoji app, tap on the gear icon in the top-left corner. Next, hit the option labeled "Change Avatar Style." You'll be able to cycle through the available styles now, like Bitstrips, Bitmoji Classic, and Bitmoji Deluxe. Swipe over to "Bitmoji Deluxe" and tap "Use This Style" to confirm.

Step 2: Take Your SelfieAfter you select "Bitmoji Deluxe," you'll be asked to "Start with a Selfie." Select "Continue," and your camera will be accessed to take a picture of you. If you've made a Bitmoji in the past, it'll skip this part and go right to the editor. In this case, tap the camera icon on the left side to take your selfie. Position yourself so that your face is inside the white circle, and tap on the camera icon on the bottom to take the picture. If you'd rather not, hit "Skip" instead.

Step 3: Make Your 'Bitmoji Deluxe'Your selfie will move to the middle-left of the screen, where you can use it at as reference point while you swipe through each section (like hairstyles and facial features) and create your Bitmoji Deluxe. Tap on the selfie at any time to expand it to the full-sized picture you took. After you're satisfied with your avatar, tap "Save Avatar" on the rightmost page — or tap the green check mark in the top-right corner. How do you feel about these changes to the Bitmoji formula? News: Google Clips Should Be Built into the Camera on Pixel Phones

News: Google Clips Should Be Built into the Camera on Pixel Phones

Google's new AI-powered camera, Google Clips, seems to be targeted at parents of young children in its current form, but the idea itself has unique potential. Just set it up somewhere, then you'll never miss a moment trying to capture the moment — you'll have a robot photographer taking care of that stuff for you.If this is the first you're hearing about Google Clips, it's one of those products that only Google could have made. Futuristic, a bit creepy when you think about it, and at least a little overpriced. Google's new Clips camera is targeted at parents of young children. Image via Google Store Clips is basically a GoPro with a clip on the back that can also serve as a stand. The unique part is how Google embedded its machine learning skills directly into the camera, so you don't actually take pictures with it. Instead, you just put Clips somewhere, then go about your day, and the AI will sit back like a voyeur until it sees the perfect shot, which it will then capture as a brief Motion Photo with ideal composition and a sort-of candid feel that you couldn't get anywhere else.Don't Miss: 5 Tips That'll Help You Be a Better Smartphone Photographer The AI magic happens entirely on-device, so you're not giving Google a peephole into your living room that it would surely use to hone its object recognition algorithms. But if Google isn't collecting any data from Clips, then where are they making money off this project, you might ask. Easy answer: From Clips' shocking $249 price tag, of course. Google Clips has a $249 price tag that many consider too high. Image via Google Store So there's plenty to like and plenty to dislike here — like I said, it's definitely a Google product. But as with many other Google projects, it has that "moonshot" feel to it — if only this tech were to find a perfect home, the whole concept of Clips might actually have a shot at succeeding and changing the way we do things. Here's the thing, though. Google already has the perfect home for Clips: Its flagship Pixel smartphones, which are renown for their AI-powered innovations and class-leading cameras.

What if the Pixel Had Clips AI?Imagine if the Pixel's camera had Clips AI built-in. You could just hold up your phone, and it would simply capture the best pictures it sees. No group photo where one person's eyes are closed, no rule of thirds grid in the viewfinder, just perfect shots automatically.Let's daydream a little more about this Clips-Pixel pairing. When you don't have to tap your screen to use your phone's camera, it'll be a lot easier to hold — no positioning your thumb awkwardly over the shutter button. This would help you get a little creative in certain scenarios, not to mention save at least a few phones from being dropped.Or you could use your Pixel more like the Clips camera — just place it somewhere and leave the camera running, then come back to see what it captured. What about those times when you're taking a big group picture? Set your phone down on the mantle and go get in the shot yourself. Why stop at the rear camera? Throw Clips' AI in the selfie cam, then strike the perfect pose while staring nonchalantly away from the camera since you don't have to look at the screen.I'm sure there are several more examples I'm not even thinking of yet, but it's easy to see how something like Clips would make even more sense on a smartphone.Don't Miss: Get Front-Facing Flash for Your Selfies in ANY Android App But is the Pixel powerful enough to handle that on-device machine learning? Yes, yes it is. It has a Google-built image processor called the Pixel Visual Core, which already applies tons of AI tricks to the smartphone's camera. It certainly has enough power to recognize the framing of a shot in real time — just ask Eleven or BB-8 after you slap them down in three dimensions using the Pixel Camera's AR Stickers. The Pixel's camera already has plenty of spatial awareness and AI smarts. If not this year's Pixels, this should definitely be doable with the Pixel 3. Though it would be nice to see a software update to the Google Camera app and Google Photos so we could try this type of functionality on existing phones now.As for the $249 price tag that will likely spell doom for Google Clips, the components that are making this thing expensive are already built into the Pixel's $649+ asking price, and people certainly don't seem to mind paying that much for a phone. Hell, maybe a feature like this would justify positioning the next Pixel against the iPhone X and its $1,000 price tag.So Google, would you please press fast-forward on the Clips experiment and skip straight to your end-game with this one? We all see where this is going, we're just hoping you do too.Don't Miss: The Next Big Thing in Smartphone Photography is Machine Learning & It's Already HereFollow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Flipboard Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Flipboard

How To: Add a Google Cast Button to Your Quick Settings Tiles on Any Phone No Root Needed

How To: Add a Google Cast Button to Your Quick Settings Tiles on Any Phone No Root Needed
Android's Quick Settings menu gives you easy access to certain actions from any screen, but the tiles available are largely dependent on your phone's OEM skin. For instance, the Google Cast button that can cast your entire screen has been exclusive to Nexus and Pixel devices, even though other phones have the requisite software to use it. Fortunately, there's a way to add it on any device running Nougat or higher. This Google Cast tile lets you mirror your phone's screen onto another device such as a TV, and all it takes in terms of hardware is a Chromecast or Google Cast-enabled device like an Android TV. Most media apps have built-in Google Cast support, but a few still don't — in these cases, the Google Cast tile will let you cast your entire screen using the Quick Settings. Luckily, there is an app that adds the Google Cast tile to any device, and it doesn't even require root.

Step 1: Install Nougat / Oreo Quick SettingsFirst, head to the Play Store and install the Nougat / Oreo Quick Settings app. This app allows you to add tiles to your Quick Settings as long as you are running Android 7.0 Nougat (or a newer version of Android).Install Nougat / Oreo Quick Settings for free from the Google Play Store

Step 2: Enable the Cast TileOnce installed, open the app and select the hamburger menu in the upper-left corner, then choose "Multimedia". You will be presented with a list of media-centric tiles that you can add to your Quick Settings. Select "Cast" and choose "Enable toggle," then tap "OK" on the popup to activate the tile.

Step 3: Add the Cast Tile to Your Quick Settings MenuNow when you open your Quick Settings menu by swiping down from the top of any screen, you will not see the tile — this is because you need to add it first. Depending on your OEM skin, the process of adding the tile may vary.To start, swipe down twice from the top of any screen to fully expand your Quick Settings menu. From here, look for a three-dot menu button, a pencil icon, or an "Edit" button. It may be in the top-right next to the gear icon or towards the bottom-right. Once you've found this button, tap it to open edit mode. From here, you'll see your active Quick Settings tiles at the top with a list of inactive icons beneath them. You may have to scroll down a bit, but find the new "Cast" tile in the lower area, which looks like a TV with the Wi-Fi logo in one corner. Once you've found the tile, long-press it, then drag it up to the top portion of this menu where your active Quick Settings tiles were. From there, tap "Done" or "Save," then you'll have Google Cast tile in your Quick Settings menu.

Step 4: Add Additional Tiles (Optional)This app isn't just about the Cast tile — it has a large list of shortcuts that can also be added to your Quick Settings menu. Only two categories of tiles require root access, with the rest available to any device running Android 7.0 or higher. The screenshots below show some of the available tiles, and you can find these by browsing the various sections in the app's hamburger menu. For a suggestion of other tiles to add, I recommend the "Caffeine" tile under Utilities. Adding it is as simple as repeating Steps 2 and 3 above, and when it's enabled, you can keep your screen on indefinitely by tapping the tile, regardless of the automatic screen timeout you choose in Settings. I cannot tell you how useful this feature has been for me. Another great one is the "Battery" tile under Utilities. Unfortunately, not all skins come with a tile that shows battery level, so this is a perfect replacement if your phone doesn't have such a tile already. I find it useful as a quick way to enter the battery menu to see my current screen on time.

Step 5: Cast Your Screen from the Quick Settings MenuFrom now on, whenever you need to cast something on your screen — say, for instance, an app that doesn't natively support Google Cast like Amazon Video — just open your Quick Settings menu by swiping down from the top of any screen. From there, tap the Cast tile, then select your Chromecast or Google Cast-compatible device from the list. With the Cast tile, you can easily mirror your display no matter what app you're using. Some apps (such as many TV providers' apps) specifically block Google Cast, so this won't get around that. However, for many apps in which the developers didn't think to add casting features, this is a perfect way to view your smartphone's content on another device. What tiles did you add to your Quick Settings? How To: Run Multiple ROMs at the Same Time on Your HTC One

How To: Run Multiple ROMs at the Same Time on Your HTC One
In my quest to find the perfect OS for my HTC One, I try any and every ROM I can get my hands on. This leads to countless repetitions of the wipe, install, and boot routine when I flash a ROM in recovery, especially when the newest ROM I try is a buggy piece of junk. But lately the process has been much easier thanks to MultiROM, which in reality is more of custom recovery than a ROM. The multiheaded beast that is MultIROM was created by developerVojtech Bocek with the intention of allowing users to install and boot as many ROMs as their device can hold. I jumped at the chance to try this on all my supported devices since it meant that I will no longer have to lose my main ROM setup whenever I want to try a new one. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.

Before We Get StartedIt goes without saying, but since you'll be installing a ROM, you will need a rooted HTC One with an unlocked bootloader. Also note that this process will replace your current recovery with a modified version of TWRP. You will also need to install MultiROM Manager from the Google Play Store, which is an app that makes it much easier to install all the necessary ROMs, kernels, and recovery files needed.

Step 1: Installing MultiROMFire up MultiROM Manager and grant it superuser permission. It will scan your device to see what it needs to install to make it MultiROM compatible. By default you will need to install MultiROM itself and the modified recovery image. Depending on your current ROM, you may already have a properly patched kernel, but if not, you will be able to install a kernel with the kexec-hardboot patch right from the app. Remember that this kernel is only applied to your main ROM, so if you plan on installing a custom kernel for a future ROM, you need not worry. When you have all the appropriate files selected, tap Install to download and flash them. If you are using an M7, you will get the MultiROM port created by Dominik Jalc, but if you have a M8, it will be the version created by Alexandru Gherghina. Once the download and install finishes, you will need to reboot your device. Sometimes the kernel does not install on the first attempt, so be sure to double check in MultiROM Manager.
Step 2: Root Your Device (Optional)If your loses root after installing MultiROM, simply flash SuperSU in TWRP to get it back.SuperSU.zip

Step 3: Install Another ROMMultiROM Manager cannot actually install ROMs—that'll be done through the modified TWRP recovery. Boot into TWRP by powering your device off, then pressing and holding Volume Down + Power and selecting Recovery from the bootloader menu. From there, tap Advanced -> MultiROM -> Add ROM. You will need to select your ROM type, where you want it to install to, and what source file you will be installing from. I'd recommend installing to your internal storage unless you have a high speed SD Card on your M8. Once the installation is complete, you will need to reboot your device.

Step 4: Selecting a ROM to BootNow whenever you reboot your device you will be brought to the MultiROM boot menu. Booting into your last used ROM requires no action, but tap Cancel and select your desired ROM to boot into a different one. You can also change your menu theme color from the Misc menu.

Managing Your ROMsDespite not being able to install ROMs, MultiROM Manager can rename and delete them. From the left slide out menu, you can tap Manage ROMs to see a list of the ones you have installed. Tap the Pencil icon to rename them, and the Trashcan icon to delete them. You should also note that you cannot delete your original ROM since it has the patched kernel installed along side it. If you run into any issues getting a ROM set up or just want to share your experience with MultiROM, feel free to drop me comment below or on Facebook and Twitter.

How To: Get Daily Weather Info Right from Your Windows 10 Calendar

How To: Get Daily Weather Info Right from Your Windows 10 Calendar
The Calendar app that ships with Windows 10 has a nice little feature that will help make your days more productive by showing the current five-day weather forecast.Of course this isn't new to other popular weather apps, but it's nice to see Microsoft listening to user feedback to make this a native feature of the Windows 10 Calendar app now. Here's how to see the weather directly inside the calendar app in Windows 10.

Step 1: Go to Location SettingsClick on the Start button and type in location settings to go to the corresponding section inside the Settings app.

Step 2: Enable Location for the Weather & Calendar AppsInside the Location settings, scroll down till you get to the area called "Choose apps that can use your location" and enable the location toggles for both Mail and Calendar and MSN Weather or Weather.

Step 3: Perform a Restart (Optional)Now, in theory, you should be good to go. However, I noticed on my machine, even when I had enabled both toggles, that the Calendar app was still refusing to play nice with the Weather app. I was frustrated by this and decided to perform the dark magic act of a computer restart. After the reboot, all was well again. So if after enabling both toggles, you are still having issues, just reboot the computer and everything should be working. Now you can plan your days more efficiently by factoring in the weather conditions from directly inside the Calendar app. It's the finer details like this that helps make Windows 10 a more polished product and shows that Microsoft is actively listening to customer feedback.

Best Navigation Apps: Google Maps vs. Apple Maps vs. Waze vs. MapQuest

Best Navigation Apps: Google Maps vs. Apple Maps vs. Waze vs. MapQuest

You don't have to be a frequent flyer to know how indispensable navigation apps have become. Many of us rely on these apps for traveling from state to state and getting around in foreign cities, but even more of us count on these apps to beat rush hour traffic and find the quickest routes to school or work. So naturally, we all have our favorite mapping apps, but which one is truly the best? While there's a wide selection of navigation apps for iPhone and Android, many have fallen by the wayside due to the rise of a choice few apps that dominate the scene. Google Maps and Apple Maps are chief among these, though there are smaller apps — namely Waze and MapQuest — that have managed to hold on and stay relevant. Let's see how they compare.
Table of ContentsComparison Chart Chart Key App 1: Google Maps App 2: Apple Maps App 3: Waze App 4: MapQuest Conclusion

Comparison Chart Image by Amboy Manalo/Gadget Hacks
Key Comparison PointsPlatform: Which of the two major mobile operating systems (Android, iOS) and two major desktop operating systems (macOS, Windows) the navigation service is available on. Countries & Territories Mapped: How many recognized countries and territories are mapped by the app. This merely includes maps, not satellite imagery, navigation, driving directions, or street view. Countries & Territories with Driving Directions: How many total countries and territories have driving directions available in this navigation app. If you travel often, you'll want a maps app that can tell you how to get from Point A to Point B in as many countries as possible. Street View: While not universal due to the herculean task of having to physically photograph every street, this awesome feature — when available — gives you a first-person view of locations to give you a clear picture of just what to expect. Overlays: Extra data that can be shown over top of the default map. These overlays can range from satellite views to terrain views and transit routes. The more information available to you, the better. 3D View: Some apps come with this feature to help you get a more natural view of things. In Google Maps, 3D view is limited to silhouettes of buildings (you'll need Google Earth if you want actual imagery). In Apple Maps, you get fully rendered 3D maps of whole cities, though it's not available everywhere. Live Location Sharing: The ability to share your current location with friends and family in real-time (or view the location of others). This is different than sharing your current location in a one-off situation where you hit the share button and copy your address to send in another app. Specifically, Google Maps and Apple Maps offer this feature. Location History: Whether or not the app can save a log of your history as you travel. Useful for re-tracing the places you visited on a memorable vacation or finding a business you visited in the past. Cultural Hotspot Indicators: Every city has an interesting locale where people love to gather and hang out. For example, Jersey City has its Downtown district, while Manhattan has East Village and a few others. An app that has these noteworthy areas highlighted can prove useful if you're interested in really taking in the local culture of a city you're visiting. Only Google Maps offers this feature currently, and the cultural hotspots are highlighted in a brownish orange color. Weather Data: This feature takes the guesswork out of current weather conditions outside, and can inform you of precipitation on your trip, temperature, air quality, and more. Indoor Maps: This feature gives you the ability to view the layout of airports, shopping centers, and/or other public buildings to ensure you never get lost. Offline Maps: The ability to download maps, allowing you to view details about an area when your phone isn't connected to the internet. Useful when your data connection is spotty or expensive depending on the country you're visiting. Traffic Data: Traffic is fluid, and can change from smooth to incredibly heavy due to a number of factors such as accidents and road work. Some apps can go even farther than these and provide you with speed traps and traffic camera locations to stay a step ahead of law enforcement. Traffic Data Source: This all-important feature is vital for any navigation app to function: the data that provides you pertinent traffic information. This can be sourced from in-house research (preferred), other users of the service, the app's parent company (like Google with Waze), or from third-party providers like OpenStreetMaps. High Traffic Warnings: As bad as rush hour is, it gets worse when an accident occurs. As such, good navigation apps will warn you of unusually heavy traffic well in advance to give you time to prepare and leave ahead of schedule. Speed Limits: Whether or not the app displays speed limits for the roads you travel on while in navigation mode. This feature is not available in all areas, however. Lane Guidance: When out for a drive, nothing is as annoying as missing your exit due to being in the wrong lane. This ingenious feature helps keep this headache to a minimum by telling you which lane you should be in while in navigation mode. Add Tolls & HOV Passes: Toll passes like EZ-Pass and HOV lanes dedicated to transit buses and carpools can make highway driving faster as they avoid traditional toll booths and regular lanes that can pile up fast. Some apps have the ability to specify that you'd like to use these lanes while navigating. Avoid Tolls & Highways: Finding out you've taken a route with tolls can leave you open to hefty fines if you don't have any cash on hand, while directions involving highways can sometimes be more of a hindrance to your trip due to congestion. Fortunately, most navigation apps give you the option to avoid these two to reduce the hassle. Choose Different Routes: Upon starting navigation, a majority of driving apps will give you the choice between two or three routes to better reflect your needs. Some apps will even alert you if a faster route opens up and present it as an option while driving to get to your destination ahead of schedule. Add Pit Stops: Long road trips inevitably lead to unplanned pit stops, be it bathroom breaks, a near-empty gas tank, or hunger. Though most navigation apps limit this feature to only one stop per trip, some apps will let you input as many additional stops as you want. Show Gas Prices: Gas prices vary from station to station, and this neat feature lets you see their corresponding prices from within the app to ensure you get the most gas for your money. Hands-Free Control In-App: Safety is paramount while driving, and manually interacting with your device is inherently dangerous for you and others on the road. Because of this, many navigation apps can be issued instructions via voice commands to maximize safety. We specified "In-App" here when testing, meaning we only counted it as a "Yes" if the app itself recognized voice commands rather than the phone's built-in digital assistant. Directions Using Other Modes of Transportation: There are plenty of ways to get around besides driving, and most navigation apps are able to provide routes for alternate forms of transportation such as mass transit, bicycling, taxis, and good old walking. Re-Center: This feature is pretty common among navigation apps, letting you instantly change the view back to your current location within your navigation route to view cross streets and get a better determination of your drive. Accessible Navigation: Many of us have special needs that have to be taken into account while on a trip, such as wheelchair-friendly locations for either us or someone we love. Some apps can accommodate these needs, others can't. Save Parking Spot: Having your navigation app save the location you parked in is very useful when visiting an unfamiliar location, especially if the place is a large, bustling urban area. Offline Navigation: Different from Offline Maps above, this is the ability to navigate with a poor or nonexistent internet connection. Great when you're transitioning between areas of good and bad cellular service to ensure smooth, trouble-free navigation. Works With Screen Off: Having a navigation app that can dictate navigation prompts even with the screen off isn't only handy while walking around, it can also be a lifesaver if your handset is running low on battery. Dark Mode: By default, most navigation apps are set to automatically enter dark mode once day turns to night to better reflect your surroundings. Some apps, however, give you the ability to permanently set them in order to help preserve your battery. Ride Share Integration: Ride sharing apps like Uber and Lyft have become a pretty common part of our daily lives, and navigation apps that have these services integrated do away with the need to open a separate app, making them more convenient overall. Picture In Picture: Sometimes, you'll need to browse while navigating. Maybe you want to read reviews of a restaurant you're visiting. This is where this feature comes in handy, but regardless of the navigation app, it's currently only available on devices running Android 8.0 or higher. Lock Screen Navigation: While walking or taking public transportation, navigating from your device's lock screen is inherently more secure than getting directions with your phone unlocked, as it gives you a layer of protection against unwanted access should your phone get lost or stolen. Show Festivals & Protests: A cultural festival like Oktoberfest can make your vacation all the more memorable, while events such as the French "Yellow Vest" protests have the potential of ruining them outright. Thankfully, there are apps out there that alert you of these events as they're happening so you can join in on the fun or avoid them, depending on your preferences. Personalized Recommendations: If your smartphone interactions aren't personal enough, some navigation apps now have a feature that can give you recommendations via a personalized feed that's based off places you've visited, along with restaurants and stores that you follow. This ensures you're always on top of locations to visit, no matter where you are in the world. Book Dinner Reservations: This feature is incredibly convenient, as it allows you to instantly reserve a table in a restaurant you want to try out. This does away with the headaches of being put on hold when calling ahead, not to mention having to open a separate app to book a reservation. Report Traffic Issues: Traffic pileups can happen out of nowhere and quickly turn a highway into a parking lot. Being able to report an accident or heavy traffic in real time can benefit other drivers, and if other drivers can do the same, it can benefit you. Post Reviews: We've all grown to rely on user-posted reviews to help us make decisions on what products to buy or services to go with, be they cars, restaurants, toys ... the list goes on. To help you chime in, some apps give you the ability to post reviews regarding places you've visited to give others a better idea of the services they provide so they know what to expect. Even if you don't want to contribute, you can benefit from this feature, as other users will review places you might want to visit. Car Support: Thanks to Android Auto and CarPlay, you're now able to use many popular navigation apps directly from your car's dash. Unfortunately, not all navigation apps are supported. AR Features: Augmented reality — or AR, for short — has been adopted by certain navigation apps for its ability to enhance user experience. Apple's Flyover, for instance, can give you a virtual birds-eye view of a supported city as you move your phone around. Widgets: This option is great for multitasking, and primarily shows navigation prompts on your device's home screen when supported. Music Integration: Playing your favorite tracks while out on a long drive goes a long way towards keeping boredom from setting in. Having an app that lets you play music in-app keeps you from having to switch back and forth between navigation and an external music app. Siri Shortcuts: With Siri Shortcuts, you can create instantly accessible commands to streamline your navigation even further. For instance, you can create a Shortcut for your morning commute to automate the task, which you can then run by summoning Siris and saying the designated command.Don't Miss: Vacationing For The 'Gram: How Instagram Is Changing Hotels & Restaurants

App 1: Google MapsTo no one's surprise, Google Maps handily takes the top spot in our comparison. The app is clearly the most comprehensive out of all the maps on this list, with 266 countries and regions mapped and full driving directions provided for 253. Beyond that, Google Maps also comes jam-packed with features to make it the best app all around for navigation both at home and abroad.Install Google Maps: Android (free) | iOS (free) Google Maps is truly an impressive app when it comes to navigation. The app uses data sourced from Google Earth and combines it with information gathered by users worldwide to provide some of the most accurate traffic data. And thanks to regular software updates, there's little doubt that the service will continue to improve. There's ride share integration using Uber and Lyft so you can quickly summon a car, and there's even support for Lime so you can find a bike to ride. Besides providing routes for cars and ride shares, Google Maps also provides directions for walking, biking, and public transit, in addition to displaying wheelchair accessible areas. (1) Summoning either Uber or Lyft can be easily done using Google Maps. (2) Finding a wheelchair accessible route with Google Maps. While all the apps on this list show gas station prices, Google Maps is by far the easiest to view. It shows the price within the details card on the bottom when you select a gas station from the map. These gas prices also appear when adding a gas station as a pit stop during longer drives. And unlike many of the apps on this list, Google Maps lets you add more than one stop to your trip.Google Maps features indoor maps for airports, malls, and museums, which can be accessed by zooming in on the target location. Buildings and other structures are displayed in 3D on the standard layout, and this is even more prominent when you swipe with two fingers to change the viewing angle, but everything is shown in 2D when the satellite overlay is applied. Luckily, the app features Street View if you need a first-person perspective to better orient yourself. (1) 3D Renderings of buildings on Google Maps. (2) Picture In Picture mode for Google Maps. With all these features at your fingertips, the app's UI can get little overwhelming at times, which brings us to the app's main downside. Google Maps' numerous overlays can easily overload your senses, and ironically cause you to get lost within app itself due to the amount of reports, landmarks, and businesses both small and large that are plastered on your screen.Thankfully, the app lets you minimize information overload by making overlays such as transit, satellite, and bicycle overlays optional. Beyond that, Google Maps also lacks a built in weather data and the option to manually report traffic-related issues. When all is said and done, however, Google Maps' benefits far outweigh any limitations it has, making it a solid companion for travelers worldwide.

App 2: Apple MapsApple Maps is Apple's answer to Google Maps, and despite a rocky start, the app has become the navigation app of choice for many iPhone users due to it's simple interface and overall reliability. As per Apple's MO, it's only available on Apple devices like iPhones and Macs, but on the flip side of that coin, the app continually improves with each major iOS update to ensure it stays competitive.Install Apple Maps: iOS (free) Apple Maps has tons of features that make it stand out from the crowd, such as full Siri integration for a truly hands-free experience, and accurate real-time reporting of delays caused by road work and accidents. In addition, the app features support for indoor maps that covers airports and shopping centers, which is incredibly useful for frequent flyers and casual tourists alike.Apple Maps also comes equipped with ride share integration, letting you summon a ride via Uber or Lyft straight from the app itself. When driving around, the app displays important data such as speed limits to maximize safety. The lane guidance feature is also the easiest to understand out of all the apps on the list, and is displayed prominently in advance of an exit or intersection to ensure they're not missed. When it comes to 3D viewing, Apple Maps wins by a mile, as it provides vivid 3D renderings of major cities across the world like London, Paris, Sydney, and Tokyo. It's worth noting that this feature currently covers 353 cities across the globe, as highlighted by the tiny "3D" badge on available cities, though Apple will likely cover more as it continues to update its app. (1) The lane guidance feature on Apple Maps is hard to miss. (2) 3D View of Jersey City. Besides 3D View's limited coverage, there's other elements that Apple Maps still has to improve on to make it a truly great navigation app. For one, the app currently doesn't support street view, though it will likely roll out with the feature at some point in the future, as it has been actively surveying areas across the United States and select countries using LiDAR-equipped vans since 2015.In addition, Apple Maps focuses heavily on urban centers rather than countries as a whole, which makes it limited compared to Google Maps and even MapQuest in terms of overall coverage. This can be clearly seen when compared to Google Map's coverage of smaller towns and rural areas, which provides more details like parks than Apple Maps. (1) Lancaster, Pennsylvania on Apple Maps. (2) The same town on Google Maps. Note the parks and rivers not shown on the former. Unlike Google Maps and Waze, Apple Maps doesn't provide you with police-related reports such as speed traps and cameras, making it less than ideal if you depend on this functionality to avoid potential traffic tickets. Bicyclists may also want to avoid using Apple Maps, as it doesn't offer bicycle navigation. But the most glaring shortcoming with Apple Maps is its availability. The app is only available for iOS and macOS devices, which places it firmly out of reach of users on the Android platform.

App 3: WazeWaze is the navigation app of choice of drivers the world over and it's easy to see why. The app features novel alerts such as speed traps to help ensure you stay ahead of law enforcement to avoid expensive traffic tickets. The app uses data gathered from fellow Wazers to build an incredibly accurate real-time view of your surroundings.Install Waze: Android (free) | iOS (free) Google purchased Waze back in 2013, and has used Google Maps data since then to enhance its user-curated services, and vice versa. Besides the aforementioned speed traps, Waze also shows you other important traffic data such a police locations, traffic cameras, road work, and accident-related slowdowns that even include their average speeds.Beyond detailed real-time traffic reports, Waze has the usual options like toll and highway avoidance built in, in addition to the ability to add toll lanes like EZ-Pass and HOV lanes for more route choices. The app also features hands-free navigation and pit stop additions to ensure safer and smoother road trips.Waze strips almost all the bells and whistles found on more popular counterparts and is comparatively bare — there are no buildings rendered in 3D and no satellite or terrain overlays, just elements you need to get around safely. Of course, this stripped down functionality has some downsides, such as limited options for other modes of transport. (1) Thanks to fellow Wazers, you can view traffic slowdowns in real time. (2) Adding toll passes and HOV lanes couldn't be any easier with Waze. As a driver oriented navigation app, Waze offers multiple options for varying modes of transportation, and can find you the optimal routes for motorcycles, electric cars, and taxis. Unfortunately, the app doesn't provide directions for biking and walking, making it less than ideal companion when not in a car, especially in urban locations.Waze's shortcomings don't end there. It has the lowest overall coverage in this list, with only 72 countries currently supported by the app. And while it did so in the past, the app has since removed the option for downloading routes for offline navigation, which can be a problem if you encounter an area of poor cellular service while driving around. And because of its lack of building outlines and indoor maps, it's harder to orient yourself and zero in on a specific building or landmark while on foot.

App 4: MapQuestThough nowhere near a famous as its Google and Apple counterparts, MapQuest has nevertheless remained a solid and reliable navigation app that's definitely worth checking out. The app has mapped out 252 countries and regions and comes standard with numerous features that makes it a great companion while sightseeing in a different state or country.Install MapQuest: Android (free) | iOS (free) Though MapQuest has long been overshadowed by its more well known competitors, the app has actually been around for a very long time. It was the map of choice for many long before Google Maps became a household name. The app's claim to fame is its layering feature that lets you apply and remove map elements like hospitals to only show relevant information and keep your map clutter-free. (1) MapQuest lets you add or remove overlays on the fly. (2) If you're craving for pizza, Mapquest has you covered. Like Google Maps, MapQuest offers real-time reports like heavy traffic due to accidents, road work, and traffic cameras, to help you steer clear of slowdowns and trouble. Speed limits are also posted and easy enough to see when navigating, along with your current speed if you're going faster than 15 mph.Beyond that, the app gives you a choice between a standard layout complete with building footprints and a satellite overlay to help you get a better perspective while out and about. Relevant weather details like the current temperature and forecast are shown in the lower-right corner and disappear once navigation has started. (1) The traffic nightmare that is New York City. (2) Speed limit posting on MapQuest As great as MapQuest is, it lacks some notable features and refinements that we've grown accustomed to, and it has a UI that's a little clunkier to access when compared to its famous competitors. Among these limitations are the lack of transit navigation and support for indoor maps of airports, shopping centers, and other points of interests found in Google and Apple Maps.MapQuest also doesn't give you the option to either navigate offline or download maps, which can be a major handicap if you're visiting a location with poor cellular service. The app also doesn't come with its own version of Street View, which can limit your perspective.Lastly, MapQuest doesn't have Picture In Picture mode, which can limit multitasking, though navigation prompts still show up in your Phone's notification panel. Despite these disadvantages, however, MapQuest is still a viable option for interstate drives and traveling abroad — it has a clean UI that is very easy to understand and interact with, which is all you need when getting around from place to place.
ConclusionAs you've seen from the chart above, Google Maps blew out the competition, largely due to the sheer amount of features it has, and the balance it achieves between that and overall user-friendliness. That's not to say that the other three apps are not without their merits, however. To the contrary, these apps all have noteworthy features that have undoubtedly contributed to their popularity.Apple Maps is arguably easier to access if you're on an iPhone, with just the right features to make it a solid choice. Waze, on the other hand, is more catered to drivers and is ideal for longer road trips, while MapQuest and its numerous overlay options make it the perfect choice for those who like to keep distractions to a minimum.
