How To: Root Your Nexus 7 Tablet Running Android 4.4 KitKat (Mac Guide)
Just because you have a Mac doesn't mean you can't root your Nexus 7 tablet. In fact, rooting Android 4.4 KitKat on both the 2013 and original 2012 N7 models is easy, if not easier than rooting it using a Windows PC.After rooting, you can enjoy many of tomorrow's features today with the help of the Xposed Framework. With it, you can unlock real full-screen mode, tweak out the battery icon, and add countless customizations to make your device one of a kind.But don't jump ahead yet. Let's get back to rooting!In this softModder guide, I'll be showing you the easiest way to root your Nexus 7 tablet on a Mac computer. I used a 2013 model, but also verified it with my 2012 model, so it should work no matter which version you have.Update: There's a new root method available, and it's the easiest one yet. No need for USB cables, computers, drivers, or toolkits. Simply download an app, run it, and you're root 30 seconds later. Check out our guide here, it's worked flawlessly with 2013 Nexus 7's, and should work for 2012 editions as well. Worst comes to worst, you can always come back to this guide, as that process does not erase any data. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.
If for some reason you're still running Jelly Bean, check out our previous guide to rooting Jelly Bean on the Nexus 7 for help. If you can't get this way or that way to work on your Mac, you can always use a friend's PC and root the Nexus 7 on Windows.
Step 1: Download the Root Files on Your MacThanks to Anuj Patel, also known as techfanatic9, all the tools we need are easily available at our disposal from his website, Androidrootz. The process is nearly identical for both the 2012 and 2013 versions of the device, just make sure you grab the appropriate files.Make a new folder on your desktop titled Nexus 7 Root, or something like that, so the files we download can be easily located.

For the 2012 Nexus 7 TabletYou will need the One-Click Unlock Bootloader Toolkit and the 2012 Nexus 7 Root Toolkit. After downloading, unzip the files and place them in the folder you created on your desktop. Step 2: Make a Back Up of Your Nexus 7This process will wipe your device. Unfortunately, unlike the Windows method, this toolkit does not include a backup option. Alternatively, you can check out our softModder guide on backing up your Nexus 7 without root or a custom recovery to prep for the next step.

Step 3: Enable USB Debugging on the Nexus 7Your Mac needs to make a connection to your device, so you'll need to enable USB Debugging on your Nexus 7 to do so. Just go into Settings -> Developer Options -> USB Debugging. Don't worry if you don't see Developer Options. You can unlock it by going into Settings -> About Device and tapping on Build Number about 7 times. You'll see a toast notification pop up letting you know that you're a developer now.
Step 4: Connect Your Nexus 7 to Your MacNow's the time to connect your Nexus 7 to your Mac computer, if you haven't done so already. Do so using your USB cord, and to be safe, make sure all other USB devices are disconnected. And just to be extra safe, use the cable that came with your device, or at the very least, a cable for any recent Android device.

Step 5: Enter Fastboot ModeTo enter Fastboot mode, turn off your Nexus, then hold the Power and Volume Down button at the same time. It should now bring up the bootloader. You'll use the Volumes keys to navigate, and the Power button to confirm, but don't worry about those for now.

Step 6: Unlock Your BootloaderOpen the Unlock Bootloader folder (which should be in your new Nexus folder) and click on the green Android icon to start the tool. This will wipe your device, so make sure to back up if you haven't done so already, unless you want to start squeaky clean. A terminal will pop up with easy to follow instructions. Just press Enter and let the program run its course. This kit should take care of everything for you, and you should see your Nexus 7 reboot back into Fastboot on its own at some point. When this happens, you should see the "locked" status for the "LOCK STATE" as "unlocked" now. You should also get a confirmation in the terminal window that the bootloader is unlocked.
Step 7: Verify That USB Debugging Is Still CheckedAfter unlocking the bootloader, use the Volume keys until you see "Start", then hit the Power key to boot the system. Once booted up, make sure USB Debugging is still checked (see Step 3 above).Reboot back into the bootloader and continue the process below.

Step 8: Run the Root ToolkitAfter enabling USB Debugging again, put the device back into fast boot mode. Now, go back into the Nexus folder on your Mac and locate the Nexus Root folder. Open it and inside you'll see another green bot titled Root.Nexus.7 . Run that. Another terminal will pop up and you'll initiate the root process by pressing Enter. This kit will install a custom recovery, specifically ClockworkMod (CWM), so midway you will see this text in the terminal:Ready to install CWM1. CWM (Version 6.0.4.3)Enter 1 then press enterJust do as it says—enter 1 and press Enter. This will send CWM over to your Nexus 7 tablet. After it's sent, the toolkit will tell you to install the "SuperSU" file from your new recovery, which we'll do in the next step.
Step 9: Flash SuperSU in Recovery ModeUse the Volume rockers on the Nexus 7 and scroll until the Recovery mode option appears. Select it using the Power button. Once in your new CWM recovery, you'll need to do exactly what the instructions in the terminal window tell you to do.Select Install Choose zip from sdcard Choose the 0/ directory Choose UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.80.zip Select Yes Once it finishes, reboot your Nexus 7 and you'll now be rooted!

What to Do if You Don't See the SuperSU FileIn some cases, the Update-SuperSU.zip file may not show up in your custom recovery. Don't panic. You can fix this by using Android File Transfer to call an audible.Locate the Root.Nexus.7 folder and find the Update-SuperSU file. With your device running regularly, connect via USB, and open the Android File Transfer program. Drag the file from your Mac's fodler and place it onto your device. Go back into Fastboot, select Recovery mode again, and follow the following steps:Select Install Choose zip from sdcard Choose the 0/ directory Choose UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.80.zip Select Yes Then reboot.

Step 10: Verify That You're RootedAn easy way to make sure the toolkit worked and your Nexus 7 is rooted is to download the free Root Checker app from Google Play. Just open the app, select Verify Root, and wait for the results. Now that you're rooted, what do you do? Like I said before, I'd go install the Xposed Framework, then try out one of the many Xposed mods on your newly liberated Nexus 7 tablet!

I'm not sure exactly when it happened, but it's awesome that you can now download music from the iTunes Store that's free of DRM (digital rights management) limitations. That was always my biggest problem with buying music from iTunes. Paying a buck for a song that I can only play on Apple devices? Really? That's what finally led me away to other legal music downloading services like eMusic and Amazon.Currently, the iTunes Store offers what they call iTunes Plus song downloads, which are the ones free of DRM. They're also a higher quality AAC format, but the pricing isn't just a buck anymore. It could be either $0.69, $0.99 or $1.29 for a song, depending on how much Apple and the record label feels like charging.Why am I talking about this now?Because I was looking for a no-cost way to convert all of my previously purchased M4P files from iTunes into MP3 format. I finally noticed that Apple allowed upgrading to the new iTunes Plus versions, which gave me a momentary sigh of relief—until I noticed it was not free.With the new iCloud feature, I thought it would be as simple as logging into iTunes and clicking on "Purchased" on the right-side quick links, then clicking on the little cloud icon next to each song (as seen in the below image) to re-download an updated version of the song that was free of digital rights management.But that is not the case. It will just re-download the protected M4P format, not the new AAC one. Then I stumbled upon the option to pay for the upgrade to iTunes Plus for all of my past music purchases, which would cost over a hundred bucks. No thanks.You could pick and choose full albums or individual songs, but still, I'm not paying $0.30 per song when it should be free (in my opinion).Because I love having a very organized iTunes library, I wanted to find another way to turn my M4P song files into either AAC (M4A) or MP3 formats. I didn't care which, I just didn't want any protected files anymore that would make it hard to play on non-Apple devices. And of course, right-clicking on the song and selecting "Create MP3 Version" did not work.I then searched the web for an obvious way to convert the files—using a DRM removal software program that could convert the files to my format of choice. But it's a very spammy world out there when it comes to this. Every program wants you to purchase it for $30 or $40 or whatever. The first twenty applications I found all wanted me to buy them. If I wanted to spend more money, I would have just used Apple's own upgrade option.Then there was the second obvious option—burn the protected songs to a compact disc using iTunes and then re-import them into M4A or MP3. This works fine, except the quality is horrible and the volume level suffers greatly on the songs. Basically, it sucks. Plus, you're still wasting money on blank CDs.So, what's the best way to go about converting your protected M4P files into MP3s?

Using iMovie and iTunes for ConversionIf you have iLife '09 still, you can easily convert your M4P files into MP3s using the iMovie '09 application. I heard this method doesn't work with the new iMovie '11, so let us know in the comments whether or not it works in the new iMovie if you've tried it.Step 1 Start a New Project in iMovieObviously, the first thing you need to do is open up iMovie. Open up a new project by hitting Command+N or going to File < New Project. It does not matter what Aspect Ratio you choose, nor which Theme you pick. This has nothing to do with the sound aspect you'll be concentrating on.Step 2 Import an ImageYou can't import any music files until you have something to go with it. After all, this is a video editing program, not music editing. But you don't need a video to start the process. Just import an image into iMovie—any image. Browse your photos in Finder and just drag and drop the picture of your choice into the iMovie project.Step 3 Prepare the ImageNow that the image is there, you'll have to fix it up a bit. For some reason, the Ken Burns effect was automatically applied to my image, and I didn't want that distracting me from my main task, so make sure your image is either cropped or fixed in the window.Just click on (or just hover over) the image in the project window on the left, then click on the little gear symbol in the bottom left of the picture. Click on Cropping, Ken Burns & Rotation.Now, make sure to choose either Crop or Fit, not Ken Burns, then press Done. I chose Crop.Next up is changing the time of the image.Step 4 Change the Image's DurationiMovie automatically sets your image at a 4 second duration, so you'll need to enlarge it to match the song you plan on converting. My example song is 3:16, so I'm going to make the image duration in iMovie that length, too.Again, click on the gear symbol on the image, but this time select Clip Adjustments.The Inspector will pop up, where you can change the 4.0s duration to your liking.I changed mine to 3:16, because that's how long my M4P song is. Click Done.This is what your iMovie project should look like now:Time to move onto the actual music part...Step 5 Add the M4P File to iMovieUse your Mac's Finder to locate the iTunes Music Folder and find the song you want to convert. Just go to Music < iTunes < iTunes Media < Music and then find the artist's name to find the song file. Then, just drag and drop it into the iMovie project.Make sure when you drop it in that you line the file up in the project so that it says "0.0s from clip start" at the bottom (as seen below), otherwise the end of your song might get cut off a bit.You've now got the music file paired with the image.Step 6 Export the File to AIFFNow it's time to export the music as an AIFF file, a high-quality format that you'll later convert to MP3 or M4A in iTunes. Make sure that either the image or song file is highlighted in the iMovie project. It doesn't matter which one.Image selected:Or music selected:Now, go up and hit Share in the top menu, then select the Export using QuickTime... option.Rename your file if you choose to, perhaps the same as the original file, so you can identify it later when you import it into iTunes.Make sure you change the Export option to Sound to AIFF if it's not already selected.Hit the Options button and select your desired Sounds Settings. Then press OK.Hit the Save button.You're sound should be exporting now to your desired location.Okay, we're now done in iMovie. You may now close the application, or keep it open if you have more files to work on.Step 7 Import into iTunesNow that you have the AIFF version of your M4P song, find it in the Finder (wherever you saved it), then open it up in iTunes. Double-clicking on it should do the trick if iTunes is set as your main music player. It should start playing automatically, but you may have to find it. Search for whatever the file name is.PS: You can also drag and drop the file into iTunes.Here you can see the AIFF file located next to its protected M4P counterpart:Now, the best part...Step 8 Convert AIFF to MP3To convert to MP3, just right-click on the file and select Create MP3 Version.Then just wait a few seconds until complete.Now, just use the song information from the MP4 version still in iTunes to fix up the song title, artist name, track number, album cover, album title, etc. Then, you can delete the M4P version and the AIFF version. You no longer need them because you now have the MP3 version!

Changing the iTunes EncoderIf you want to change the encoder to something else, you can change it by going to iTunes Preferences:Then clicking on the Import Settings button in the General tab.Then select your encoder of choice. You can pick either AAC (M4A), AIFF (AIF), Apple Lossless Encoder, MP3, or WAV. Press OK when you've picked the one you want and close the Preferences box.And that's it. You've just successfully converted your protected M4P file to an MP3, M4A or whatever. Like I said before, this might only work in iMovie '09, but you can try in iMovie '11 if you want.

Starting with Marshmallow, Android added a built-in theme engine called "Runtime Resource Overlay," or RRO. This theme engine was intended to be used only by smartphone manufacturers, not end-users, so unlike Cyanogen's CM Theme Engine, owners can't use it to change the look and feel of their phones.But this is Android we're talking about here—of course there's a way to activate this hidden theme engine. In the past, we've been able to activate RRO using an app called Layers, and now, that same app has been completely revamped to work on Nougat and make the whole process of unlocking these hidden themes even easier.The Layers developers thought this overhaul was significant enough to warrant a name change, and now the app is called "Substratum." So even if you've installed Layers in the past, Substratum is worth revisiting.

This will take you to a listing of all the Substratum-compatible themes on the Play Store, so browse through these and find at least one that suits your tastes. Once you've picked out a theme or two, you can simply install them like any other app.

Step 4: Apply Your ThemeWith at least one Substratum theme installed, head back to the main Substratum app, then pull down to refresh. From here, select your first theme.Substratum lets you mix and match elements from multiple themes, so you've got two options from here. First, you could simply toggle the switch at the top of the screen to use the selected theme for all apps and elements that it's capable of theming. Secondly, you can go through the list and tick the boxes next to any individual app or element that you'd like to theme. Once you've selected the elements you'd like to theme, tap the floating action button in the bottom-right corner, then choose "Install Selected." After a few seconds, you'll see a pop-up informing you that a reboot is needed. If you only intend to apply one theme right now, tap "OK" here. Otherwise, if you're mixing an matching themes, tap "Later," then select elements from your second theme, and reboot when you're finished.

Step 5: Enjoy the New LookAfter rebooting, your new theme will be in effect. Substratum themes are capable of changing the look and feel of almost any app or menu on your device, so the new look is all-encompassing. Even if something's missing from your first theme, you can install another one, then apply only the missing elements to complete the look. Google's launchers are some of the most polished home screen apps out there, but they lack the ability to customize. With the old Google Now Launcher, we had Xposed GEL Settings to add options for tweaking the layout, but that project was abandoned when the Pixel Launcher came out. Now, a new root mod will give us some key customization settings for Google's latest launcher.In many ways, this is like Xposed GEL Settings for the Pixel Launcher. It's not quite as feature-rich, but it lets you pick a custom icon pack, apply icons to individual apps, change app labels, and even set custom widget sizes. Shout out to the XDA Portal team for finding this first, but we've really got to hand it to developer Kieron Quinn for creating such an awesome app, because with these extra settings and Google's polish, the Pixel Launcher is now almost perfect.

Step 1: Install Pixel Launcher ModsThe new app is fittingly called Pixel Launcher Mods. It's not on the Play Store, but you can grab the latest version from XDA Labs. Head to the following link, then scroll down and select the "Releases" tab and tap the download link. Next, you'll need to sign into your XDA account — if you don't have one, you can sign up here.Download Pixel Launcher Mods from XDA Labs Once signed in, select the "Releases" tab and tap the download link again. This time, the file will download. When it does, open it by tapping the "Download complete" notification, then press "Install" on the prompt.

Step 2: Apply an Icon PackTo apply a new icon pack to your home screen, open Pixel Launcher Mods and select "Apply Icon Pack." From there, just make sure you have an icon pack app installed, then select it from this list. Step 3: Change Individual App IconsIf you want to mix and match icon packs, or if the "Apply Icon Packs" setting 1 isn't working for you, start by tapping "Edit Icons & Labels." From here, select an app, then tap its icon on the popup menu. Next, choose "Icon Pack Icon," then select your icon pack and tap "Use (icon pack's) Picker." From there, find an appropriate icon and select it, then press "Apply" on the prompt in Pixel Launcher Mods.

Step 4: Change App NamesThe same menu depicted in Step 3 lets you change the names of your apps. Just select the app from the "Edit Icons & Labels" menu, but instead of tapping the icon, tap the name field and write in a new name. From there, just tap "Apply," then the app will have a new name wherever it appears on your home screen.

Step 5: Adjust Widget SizesThe last awesome feature added by Pixel Launcher Mods is the ability to resize widgets. This can really come in handy when you want to shrink a certain widget to fit it on a crowded home screen page, or if you want to expand a 4x1 widget to better fit a 5x5 home screen grid.To try this out, you'll need to have the widget added somewhere to your home screen already. But be careful — if you're expanding a widget and there's not enough room, it will remove any adjacent widgets automatically. In that case, it's best to have the widget you're expanding on a home screen by itself temporarily.Other than that, just head to "Resize Widgets" in the app's main menu, then select your widget from the list. From there, use the controls to adjust the widget width and height. As you can see below, this feature works flawlessly. I find it really helpful for 4x1 widgets, which is a common size from years past when home screen grids were only 4x4, but looks out of place on today's 5x5 home screens. Play Music's default widget size is 4x1 (left), but it looks a lot better when sized to 5x1 (right) on a newer device.

Step 6: Tweak App SettingsAll of these changes take effect on the fly, but if you experience any issues, you may want to take a quick trip to the "Options" menu inside the Pixel Launcher Mods app. In here, there are two settings worth noting: "Overwrite Adaptive Icons," which prevents conflicts with icon packs on newer phones, and "Apply icons when app updates," which is enabled by default and prevents a bug from occurring. Overall, I think this is an awesome app. In just a few minutes, I was able to give my Pixel XL a complete makeover with Galaxy S8-style icons and perfectly-sized widgets.
